Erasmus as a middle name?

What do you think of Erasmus as a boy's middle name? I've always thought Erasmus Darwin (poet, physician, philosopher, naturalist, inventor and leading intellectual of 18th C England) was very cool, but it only just occurred to me as a name to use. It seems to be very rarely used.

I have been doing my family tree and have discovered great grand uncles called Erasmus, Theopholis, Glenco and Willoughby.

I LOVE Erasmus.

Had I had a son (2 dds) then he would have been Solomon Erasmus. LOVE IT but people I told about it laughed. A middle name need not be used much anyway so I say go for it.

A1980 · 22/08/2010 01:45

It's certainly different and tbh how often do you use your middle name anyway.

It reminds me of a student foreign exchange programme!

Tortington · 22/08/2010 01:49

its pretentious - but so are a lot of names the only difference is - this is also shite. and it makes me think of any bell Grin

mathanxiety · 22/08/2010 05:47

Go for it.

ragged · 22/08/2010 05:49

That's brave :).

DandyDan · 22/08/2010 08:52

Definitely. Erasmus was one the main C16th Renaissance philosophers and general man of intelligence. And it's a family name for you.

stinkypinky · 22/08/2010 08:59

Father of Charles Darwin don't you know Grin

mopsyflopsy · 22/08/2010 10:25

Lovely. I'd use it as a first name.

BabyValentine · 22/08/2010 10:37

I think it's great, go for it. You an afford to be a bit brave with a middle name. DS could always drop it if he completely hates it.

tammytoby · 22/08/2010 10:38

Erasmus is great.

Shaz10 · 22/08/2010 10:48

I knew I'd heard it somewhere before www.britishcouncil.org/erasmus.htm

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 22/08/2010 17:51

Thanks, a surprising level of approval!

Shaz 10, I know! Maybe it'll help his application stand out in 18 years time??

Uh oh, you think that's brave...wait till you hear the names DH likes for a girl. I am having to restrain him, but as I have pretty much won on boys first name (a very sensible Welsh family name) I am trying to be open minded. Will post a short list soon! Grin

Horrid.

Makes me think of the Finnish rock band The Rasmus!
