TBH its tricky because your names are not at all the kind I gravitate towards, very biblical (I think that is the word I'm looking for) sounding for the most part.

I dont really like any of them but Ebenezer is really really awful, as is Dudley. Jerimiah isnt too bad, could be Jem for NN??

TheDoodler · 18/08/2010 14:23

Mordecai - Never heard of this. Quite like it though
Jethro - My dog's name and everyone says harhar West Country Rude Comedian etc. I say no...Tull actually
Hershel - A nice strong name
Ishmael - Moby Dick! But a good strong name.
Lazarus - no, no just no! (cue endless jokes about rising from dead)
Ulysses - Not really got an opinion
Cedric - Like this alot - potential Harry Potter link evaporating with the years i think.
Desmond - Underused - maybe because Des is very 70s sounding
Clarence - Like this alot
Bernard - 70s thing again
Shem - Very nice
Gideon - Very nice
Jeremiah - Yes this is lovely
Gil - Not really got an opinion
Peter - but ds middle name (bit boring)
Dudley - Don't like
Forrest - Gump! Don't do it to him... Confused
Hiram - As in Hiram Holiday? Very nice and again underused
Ebenezer - is it too Scroogy? - Yes, yes it is
Ephraim - Like this one (but poss not if you have an Eli already)
John - Confused
Abraham - Abe is very cute for a babe
Moses - to popular these days for your taste i think

Can you tell i'm avoiding the ironing Grin

ValiumSingleton · 18/08/2010 14:25

Mordecai - no
Jethro - bit hillbilly but I like the sound
Hershel - no
Ishmael - I prefer just Ismael. I knew an Ismael
Lazarus - no
Ulysses - hmmm. Are you all fabulously well-educated, eccentric, wealthy and arty!?
Cedric - no
Desmond - no
Clarence - no
Bernard - no, St Bernard
Shem - no
Gideon - I like this one
Jeremiah - no
Gil - no
Peter - I like this one but not in your family

Forrest - no
Hiram
Ebenezer - is it too Scroogy? yes
Ephraim - no. It reminds me of phlegm
John - no, not in your family
Abraham - I'm not a fan but this could work for you.
Moses - not a fan, but as with Abraham, in your family, not out of place.

What about Ezequiel or Thaddeus

ValiumSingleton · 18/08/2010 14:26

ps, Hiram - no. This was the name of Ruth's hair dresser boyfriend on 6 feet under.

CupcakesHay · 18/08/2010 14:35

MrsJohnDeere · 18/08/2010 14:36

The only ones I like are Peter and John but they are very different to your other dcs names (which may or may not matter).

NormanNorris · 18/08/2010 14:37

Peter or John.

tummytickler · 18/08/2010 15:20

thanks for opinions!
Valium - why the BIG no to SHem (it is my favourite, but not dh's - yet!)

OP posts:
Cortina · 18/08/2010 15:23

Jethro - like, getting trendy around here though.

Peter & John - like

Jeremiah and Cedric, like a lot. Really love Jeremiah!

Cortina · 18/08/2010 15:23

Do you like Skandar btw? I am considering but not heard of many.

BelligerentGhoul · 18/08/2010 15:25

Love Gideon.

Not at all sure why anybody would consider Lazarus or Ebenezer, unless for shock value tbh. I like Peter but if it is already one of your children's mns then I wouldn't use it. John is fine.

Shem is a name that I really, really dislike and Dudley is bad too.

Sorry but I think we must have v different taste. I started to post on your girls' list too but disliked so many of them that I thought you wouldn't want my opinion.

I'm with Valium on Thaddeus - think it's a great name.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 18/08/2010 15:59

Moses and Ishmael. Love them both.

mathanxiety · 18/08/2010 17:11

Mordecai -- Love
Jethro -- Like
Hershel -- Love
Ishmael -- Love
Lazarus -- Love, also Lazar
Ulysses -- ok
Cedric -- ok
Desmond -- meh
Clarence -- Dislike, prefer Clement
Bernard -- dislike
Shem -- Love
Gideon -- 'giddy up' (that's a No)
Jeremiah -- Love
Gil -- ok
Peter -- Love (mn of brother no problem imo)
Dudley -- No
Forrest -- NNNNOOOOOOO
Hiram -- Love
Ebenezer -- Ok, but impossible to escape the Scrooge association I fear
Ephraim -- Nice but too close to 'diaphragm'
John -- Love, also love Jonas
Abraham -- Love
Moses -- Love

I also love Ezekiel and Thaddeus.

Love Ashkenazi names in general.

ValiumSingleton · 18/08/2010 17:17

Just thinking, Amos and Moses in the same family is too much. Bit like an anagram but not quite. Could be tongue trippy when you're calling out all the names in a hurry.

suspiria · 18/08/2010 17:35

My favourites are

Moses
Abraham
Gideon
Ishmael
Mordecai
Shem
Jeremiah
Ebenezer

I have an Elijah so I love a good biblical name

What do you think of Simeon or Tobiah ?

Lora69 · 18/08/2010 18:04

Mordecai would get shortened to Mord, which sounds like Maude??
Jethro maybe
Hershel yuk
Ishmael too common in asian cultures
Lazarus would be a laughing stock of school. unless he was home schooled ;)
Ulysses no, this is in a song
Cedric dislike
Desmond awfuk
Clarence too girly
Bernard reminds me of the awful bernard shaw. or a dog.
Shem sounds like a nickname? is there a long version?
Gideon sounds really really gay
Jeremiah too biblical for my liking but cant get jerry which is more accepted
Gil this is a girld name!! or on a fish lol
Peter - but ds middle name this one stands out on the list as it doesnt really fit in with the rest? wondering whether there is a story to this one?
Dudley quite american, surnamey
Forrest quite like. again americany
Hiram dislike!
Ebenezer - is it too Scroogy? YES!
Ephraim meh
John Jonathan even better nn Jonny/Jon
Abraham dont like
Moses dont think anyone can pull this off!!

but the names arent my taste, so i was never gonna be in love with them hehe.

i really dont know

tummytickler · 18/08/2010 18:08

suspiria - I have an Eli too (he is really Elijah, but he won't let anybody use his full name!).
I know a Simeon who I dislike immensely, so that is a definate no-no. Tobiah - my dh does not like -iah endings, Jeremiah only makes it on because dh likes Jem! Although he would call a ds Ariel if he had his way, but so many people we know would thinkof the mermaid and think it is a girls name and pronounce it like the washing powder, which annoys me, because it is wrong - grr. Don't even get me started on the mispronunciation of Levi - that really annoys me, as it has ruined a great name for me.

OP posts:
tummytickler · 18/08/2010 18:11

Lora69 - Mordecai would get shortened to Morrie which is the best nn of all time imo!
Gil is pronounde with a hard 'G' as in girl.
Gideon - well, maybe he will be gay and take me out dancing and shopping for shoes - brilliant!
But how a name can sound 'gay' (except maybe Gaylord) I will never know.

OP posts:
Atlasive · 18/08/2010 18:17

Jeremiah - like
Gil - not keen
Peter - like, but not sure on re-using a middle name
Dudley - a place name
Forrest - Gump
Hiram - it's OK
Ebenezer - like, but unfortunately yes you might always get Scrooge jokes
Ephraim - reminds me of cold-frame
John - like
Abraham - like
Moses - it's OK

How about..........

Ezekiel (Zeke), Seth, Albert, Aaron, Jared, William, Samson, Clement, Frederick, Gregory, Francis, Felix, David, Dunstan, Edmund, Luke, Nicholas, Mathias, Tiberius, Benedict, Constantine, Clement, Rufus, Marius, Maximilian, Christian, Malachi, Justin, Ptolemy, Quintus, Henry, Vincent, Isaac, Richard, Julius, James, Walter, Micah, Silas, Thomas, Zacharius, Theodore, Salvator, Raymond, Nathaniel, Solomon, Judah, Martin, Victor, Marcellus, Justus, Leopold, Cornelius, Mark, Lawrence, Lucius, or Theophilus (Theo)?

mathanxiety · 18/08/2010 18:22

Shem was one of the sons of Noah, the others being Ham and Japhet. Shem is alleged to be the ancestor of the Semitic peoples, Ham the Africans/Cushites, and Japhet the peoples of Eurasia.

Aram is an unusual Biblical name (one of the descendants of Ham), and Asa or Asher might also fit with your other names?

(Am a bit {hmm} at the idea of a 'gay name')

tummytickler · 18/08/2010 18:34

math - I think Ham might be a bit much even for me Grin
You can't have a gay name - the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard!
I know dh does not like Asa or Asher, do not know his opinion on Aram though. Will ask when he gets back form work.

Where did you find a husband who loves names from!? A rare breed.

tummytickler · 18/08/2010 18:52

He doesn't love names exactly, he very kindly humours me, and is decent enough to at least have an opinion! I feel very sorry for friends whose dh's wont discuss names for the dc's. It would drive me bonkers!
We also already have 4dc, so have been through the name book a fair few times Grin

mathanxiety · 18/08/2010 18:58

You can't ask more than that, Tummytickler. (Remembering the Colmcille debate over three pregnancies, which I won by default as the last 3 were girls))

Thissideofchannel · 18/08/2010 21:29

I like Cedric, Bernard and Gideon in particular.
