is Benedict becoming popular? Just read on another thread that it is but I haven't heard it at all?

I don't know any. It's a nice name - if a bit 'monk-like'!

DramaInPyjamas · 14/08/2010 20:51

Don't know any either.

plonker · 14/08/2010 20:53

I only know one Benedict.

Lots of Bens though.

tummytickler · 14/08/2010 20:54

I see it mentioned on forums a lot, but have never come across any in real life. I think forums give a false idea of what is popular as people bandy about ideas that they do not use.
I see a lot of babies too as I work on labour/post natal ward and i have never met a Benedict.

oooh, I feel a lot better now about it. I have to say I love this site as you get responses really quick - am very impressed, am new to mumsnet but happy to be here!

I know one who is 9 and one who is 2. I think it's a gorgeous name.

SpiderWilliam · 14/08/2010 21:03

I don't know any in RL, but I predict it might have a rise in popularity this year as a result of Benedict Cumberbatch who is playing Sherlock Holmes on the BBC. There are alot of women lusting after him on Twitter at the moment!

It's not about to become the new Jack though, so don't panic. Smile

Ineedsomesleep · 15/08/2010 08:46

The only ones I know are adults. Love the name though.

mumtoabeautifulbabyboy · 15/08/2010 22:13

I love, love, love this name but ended up going for Benjamin because everyone I mentioned it to in real life immediately responded that my dc would be nnamed Bendy Dick all through school.
I still feel a bit sad that I let them put me off but I would have hated it if my ds was upset about his name.
Will repeat, I love the name!

ZZZenAgain · 15/08/2010 22:14

I know two, don't think it is all that wide-spread. Nice name

LuluF · 16/08/2010 20:57

I think it's great name, though, don't know about you, but I'm a bit disappointed there's not a different short name than 'Ben'. I have been wondering if it'll become more popular since Benedict Cumberbatch's profile has been raised. And then there's the Pope. But I married into a Catholic family, so it might not be an issue for everyone. But I'm rambling...

LuluF · 16/08/2010 21:00

Sorry, somehow missed your post SpiderWilliam.

Eglu · 16/08/2010 21:02

I know a Benedictus! I like old popes' names, which is surprising.

my husband had a cousin with the same name, however his nickname was bendy dick (sorry).

rachel234 · 16/08/2010 21:34

The problem with Benedict (apart from possibly the bendy dick nickname) is that it WILL be shortened to Ben. And there are loads of Bens around...

ladybrothelburgher · 16/08/2010 21:38

I know at least four little Benedicts.

Atlasive · 17/08/2010 12:01

I much prefer it to Benjamin.
