Which do you prefer? To go with a surname v like 'House'. Thanks!

Depends. If the surname is a noun (like Balls, House, Stone etc) then go for Octavia.

If it's NOT then go for Ophelia.

Octavia is a car (just bought one). Skoda as a nickname?

Ophelia - nice - Feely as a shortened name? Not as nice.

Sorry

Octavia = car to me

toja555 · 12/08/2010 14:29

Ophelia for me, sounds softer.

Apphia · 12/08/2010 16:35

Opheila

Nickname Effie as an alternative to Feely...?

ExitPursuedByABear · 12/08/2010 16:41

Love them both, but prefer Octavia. I considered it but shied away as wasn't it a name given to the eighth child? And I only have the one. She was due in September but ended up hanging on until October (which used to be the eighth month?), so I could have got away with Octavia after all. Damn

susitwoshoes · 12/08/2010 16:50

Ophelia, you could always pronounce it ofeylia, (a la Pan's Labyrinth) which is pretty too, and less sniggerworthy depending on your surname.

Octavia was always my least favourite Jilly Cooper heroine!

Kathleen123 · 13/08/2010 11:44

Both two very posh names IMHO.

Ophelia is pretty name, but she is a tragic heroine.

Octavia, to me, is too try hard. Unless, its your eighth child, and then its perfect.

As posh names go, my favourites are

Verity
Tamara (nn Tara)

violethill · 13/08/2010 11:57

Ophelia is beautiful but be very careful to check out with the surname. Also bear in mind that if she chooses to change her name on marriage it could have interesting results!

Octavia is also beautiful, but it means 'eighth', so I wouldn't use it unless for an 8th child.

moragbellingham · 17/08/2010 21:39

Pipkins?

Atlasive · 17/08/2010 22:11

Octavia is a great name :)

I don't see why you have to have a connection with the number 8 to use Octavia. It would be a pity for the name to become extinct unless anyone has 8 children, the eighth is a girl and they decide upon Octavia as their favourite name! But if you wanted a connection, it would be good for a baby born in October (which used to be the 8th month).

Not so keen on Ophelia I'm afraid.

Thissideofchannel · 17/08/2010 22:23

I love both, but prefer the sound of Octavia. Ophelia sounds too much like Offal...

Octavia needs no connection to number 8 just as Quentin doesn't need to be the 5th child.
