Seraphina / Theadora - what do you think?

Help! We like both Seraphina (shortened to Sef or Phina) and Theadora (shortened to Thea or Dora) but I am not sure if they sound a bit 'posh'??

What do you think?

Seraphina is a Disney cat to my mind (sorry). Loving Theadora/Theodora, shorted to Thea. Dora doesn't work as a nm/shortening IMHO prepare for choruses of 'Dora the explorer'. Dora the explorer needs to vanish from the face of the earth, for lots of reasons, not least my sanity.

Pasiphae · 12/08/2010 10:48

I like Seraphine better than Seraphine, and Theodora is stunning, although I am note sure about the nickname Dora...

Pasiphae · 12/08/2010 10:49

I meant better than Seraphina.

Takver · 12/08/2010 11:04

Both nice, not in the least too posh to my mind. Theadora is one of my favourite names ever, especially shortened to Thea, but Seraphina is pretty too.

(BTW I know a child Dora, have never noticed any Dora the Explorer comments.)

BuntyPenfold · 12/08/2010 11:38

Don't think Seraphina is posh as it is our cleaner's name - sorry.
I do like Thea very much.

If you spell it Theodora it has an odor in it

Theadora was the wife of the Emperor Justinian and she was proper norty (Google Procopius 'The Secret History' if you can be arsed)

...don't let it put you off though. I don't know how many classical scholars she'll run into in everyday life!

I have a dd called Delilah (also reviled as a prostitute/manipulative type) which sometimes- not often- causes a Hmm and it hasn't done her any harm Grin

BuntyPenfold · 12/08/2010 13:51

Love Delilah, and my DF thinks Jezebel is pretty, a bit Jasmine, a bit Isabel.

lulabellamozerella · 12/08/2010 15:07

I love Seraphina but it is my ideal name for a girl so I'm not exactly objective

skyeplusbump · 13/08/2010 18:09

love seraphina!
makes me think of the 'his dark materials' books (good witch)
i really wanted this or lyra for dd but it was just as the film came out and i wasnt sure how big it would get...reckon it would've been fine though,

((sulks))

also always really loved jezebel...not sure if i could do it though! Grin

LynetteScavo · 13/08/2010 18:12

I like Theadora best. Smile

brazenhussy · 13/08/2010 18:43

skyeplusbump · 13/08/2010 19:08

Envy

skyeplusbump · 13/08/2010 19:08

im going to have to have more kids.Hmm

brazenhussy · 13/08/2010 19:29

That made me laugh skyplusbump because I said te exact same thing because I had 5 girls names that I just HAD TO HAVE, then my 5th child was a boy Shock

skyeplusbump · 13/08/2010 19:33
Grin i was planning to use one of my lovely names (prob serephina) this time... but,shock.horror. dd is going to be a BOY! Shock
Rafi · 13/08/2010 19:33

We have a Serafina (Fina to family, Serry to her friends).

Love it & it suits her Smile

brazenhussy · 13/08/2010 19:48

skyeplusbump - how inconsiderate of him!

Rafi - My Seraphina is Fifi to family (except my MIL who says it makes her sound like a poodle) and Fi to her friends.

skyeplusbump · 13/08/2010 19:54

my thoughts exactly.Wink

Rafi · 13/08/2010 23:56

Ours used to be Fifi to family, brazenhussy, but it's apparently now beneath her 9-year-old dignity & we're no longer permitted to use it Grin

brazenhussy · 14/08/2010 14:02

OMG Rafi, exactly the same here, mine is 9 too and has requested we call her Fi!

I'm a bit gutted really as A. I love the name Fifi and B. my ex MIL hates it so I want to keep using it as long as poss Grin

LibertyGibbet · 14/08/2010 14:08

I prefer Dorothea to Theadora and it has the same nn potential.

Seraphina is beautiful. Smile

DastardlyandSmugly · 14/08/2010 14:12

I actually like them both pretty equally. Prefer Dora as a nickname for Theodora.
