Lorcan or Lucas?

Honest opinions on these two names please!

We love Lucas but are really worried that it was last year's highest climber in the top 100. Is it in danger of becoming a bit chavvy (sorry hate that word, but can't think of a substitute...)

Lorcan is an irish name (pronounced as it reads). We also really like this, but I've seen it described on other forums as a "star trek" name! What do people think?

Prefer Lucas to Lorcan - agree re the star trek comments!

LaundryLyne · 11/08/2010 21:28

Lorcan is much nicer.

Lucas is a surname and a fussy version of Luke.

PaulineCampbellJones · 11/08/2010 21:39

Both nice names, prefer Lorcan. I know two little Lucas though and both gorgeous.

SenoraPostrophe · 11/08/2010 21:43

lucas isn't a "fussy" version of luke, it's the spanish version.

Iop, you didn't actually need to use the word chavvy there. perhaps "common" is the word you're after...

LaundryLyne · 11/08/2010 21:50

But why not just go for Luke unless you have a Spanish connection?

Missmodular · 11/08/2010 21:50

Sorry, Lorcan sounds to me like a shortening of Lord Lucan. Is that just me?

AlisonDubois · 11/08/2010 21:56

Definitely Lorcan.
I soooo wanted to call DS this but DH looked at me as if I'd lost the plot.
This is first time I've read or even heard of anyone else wanting to use this name.
Go for it...Lucas sounds a bit 'weak' to me.

proudfoot · 11/08/2010 22:26

@ LaundryLyne - why would someone need a Spanish connection to use Lucas?? It is not just a Spanish name but widely used in many countries. Here (Austria) it is very popular and seen as a normal, typical German name. Also v. popular throughout Eastern Europe...

Lucas is a lovely name and I would choose it rather than Lorcan (which is okay but personally just don't like it as much - Lucas seems more classic)

mathanxiety · 12/08/2010 00:58

I love Lorcan -- I think it's a strong name.

sunnydelight · 12/08/2010 05:30

Lorcan is gorgeous. I really wanted this for DS1 after DH wouldn't even consider Oisin (I'm Irish) but couldn't get him to agree. (I finally got my Irish name for DD Grin).

ValiumSingleton · 12/08/2010 08:47

Lorcan a good strong name and I like it more than Lucas. Even in Ireland I know fewer Lorcans than I do Lucases. What about Marcus over Lucas? Far fewer of them I think.

AT1137 · 12/08/2010 09:29

Lorcan is fab! Go with that one!

kiwidreamer · 12/08/2010 12:55

Lorcan is awful IMO, its just ripe for playground bullying (tho its true kids will always find something to pick on but Lorcan the dorkan is just too easy) and is very 'syfy' sounding in line with the comments about Star Trek, the Lord Lucan thing came to my mind too.

Cortina · 12/08/2010 12:57

Prefer Lucian/Lucien or Lucius just to be controversial. Prefer Lucas at a push to Lorcan.

wigglesrock · 12/08/2010 13:25

I love Lorcan, currently badgering my dh for current bump, but he has a really strong aversion to it (says it sounds like something you would find under your sink!! Think he is alluding to cleaning products but how he can comment on cleaning products is beyond me!!)

I agree with valium in more ways than one!! I know more Lucases, Luca's than I do Lorcans here in Ireland.

englishmummyinwales · 12/08/2010 14:09

Does it really matter that Lucas was the highest climber last year? If you love it, go for it. It's not as if there are likely to be 10 in every class. I only know of one Lucas and one Lukas (mine!), plenty more Charlies and Thomases. (But I would say go for those too if you had said you liked them). I think you could regret not going for the one you really love deep down.

kaycat · 13/08/2010 12:25

Thanks everyone, I think of the two we're leaning towards Lorcan but far from decided.

Cortina I LOVE Lucien, just need to sell it to DH

Love both names. My son's nursery class has 15 boys and three are called Lorcan, strange but true!
