Should I use two middle names?

For those of you who read my previous thread about my short list of girls names, I think we have definately decided to use Esther Isabel/la or Esther Rose as a name for my little girl due on the 26th August.

What I wanted your opinion on ladies, is if you think it would be too much to put in an additional second name. My grandmothers name was Phyllis Mary who I was very, very close to and my mums middle name is Mary. I thought it would be nice to add Mary in there after Rose or Isabel/la but wanted to know if you thought it was too much and also if we named her Rose Mary or Mary Rose (I realise this is the name of a sunken ship)do you think the whole name sounds as nice?

All your comments are much appreciated Smile

My DH has two middle names as one is a family name like you are planning. So does my BIL. I like the idea a lot but found it difficult enough coming up with one!

discombobulation · 06/08/2010 20:38

Why not? We gave DD 2 after a sudden family death, still got to use a mn we 'liked' as the first mn as well that way!

Esmee · 06/08/2010 20:50

I think Esther Mary Isabel would be beautiful!

iskra · 06/08/2010 21:16

I agree, why not? I have 2 middle names & I can't say it's ever been a problem... I gave my daughter 2 middle names.

LynetteScavo · 06/08/2010 21:20

DD has two middle names.Smile

weegiemum · 06/08/2010 21:21

We gave ds 2 middle names - He's Aidan Paul Russell Surname- Aidan cos we liked it, Paul after dh's Grandad, Russell after my Dad.

Any more is a bit crass I think but 2 is OK!

JamieJay · 06/08/2010 21:23

DH has 2 middle names but actually finds it a bit of a pain in the neck with official stuff as there is never enough room on forms so he just using on of the names.

He has asked that we only give baby 1 middle name when she arrives for this reason.

Just wanted to say, Esther is gorgeous!

I like Esther Isabel Mary rather than Esther Rose Mary (i would have just Esther Rosemary).

Esther Mary Isabel/la with the nick name (from the initials) of Emi- so the choice of four names in those stroppy teenage years
we have a dd with three names and initials spell Gem
she's 10 and thinks it's cool

DD has 2 middle names. dc2 due on monday will also have 2 middle names, we have them picked for a girl but are still deciding on a 2nd middle name for a boy.

Roz14 · 07/08/2010 06:12

Thanks for all your suggestions so far. Maybe 2 middle names is not as uncommon as I first thought Grin

Dd has two middle name. She has one name which is my grandma's name and also mil's name. Then the second name is my maiden surname.

Ds has two names too. My maiden surname again and mine and dh's greatgrandad's name.

serendipity16 · 08/08/2010 11:13

My 3 boys all have 3 middle names & my 2 girls have 1 middle name.

All middle names have been family members, some with us & some not.

My cousin has 9 middle names, my auntie gave him all my uncles names.... think 9 is a bit too much lol.

Tarlia · 08/08/2010 17:49

I have two middle names and it's never been a problem. However, personally having Esther Rose Mary does not look right to me and sounds a bit... hmm bitty? Have you considered Esther Rosemary?

Roz14 · 08/08/2010 22:03

Tarlia - I think I agree. Esther Rosemary does sound much better that Esther Rose Mary Smile

My DD is Isabella Evelyn Rebecca, her 2 middle names are her Grandma's middle names. In fact her Grandma's full name was Gladys Evelyn Rebecca but I couldn't face Gladys as it reminded me of Phoebe's scary picture from Friends Smile But I loved the middle names and used them.

In fact she ended up being born on that woman's birthday by pure chance. LOL

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 08/08/2010 22:24

DS and DD both have two middle names, and DC3 will have two middle names too.

Margeaux · 08/08/2010 22:27

2 of mine have 2 middle names Smile

redbindippurs · 08/08/2010 22:27

How about Esther Mary Rose

nooka · 08/08/2010 23:07

I have two middle names and like JamieJay's dh find it a nuisance because so many electronic forms only allow one, or one initial (credit cards etc). As my name is not nooka one initial surname I tend to drop both middle names rather than just use one. Both my children have just the one middle name as a result.

Roz14 · 09/08/2010 11:18

I have been considering the fact that having two names may make it a little difficult when completing forms but not too concerned because Mary and our surname (1 syllable) is very short. I can see it being a little frustrating though if you are always running out of room on forms, credit cards etc. If that was the case, I wouldn't mind her just using one of the names for that purpose Smile.

redbindippurs - we are considering Esther Mary Rose but was a little [sceptical] because that was the name of a sunken ship.
