Having been poorly motivated and without a clue where to start on names I happened across "Isla" yesterday. DH not at all sure. He's after Emily or Lucy.

What are your thoughts on Isla?

Hi, my husband really liked Isla when we thought we were probably having a girl, i didn't mind it but really wanted Miranda.

Just found out we're having a boy though !

Anyway i think Isla is quite pretty
Like it much more than Emily or Lucy which are both v v popular where we live.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 02/08/2010 07:52

Isla is quite popular too. All are pretty names, maybe a bit conventional, but pretty.

SpiderWilliam · 02/08/2010 07:59

I really like it but wouldn't use it myself because I think it will date quite quickly. My theory is that as a teenager I watched "Home & Away" and liked Isla Fisher's name. Fastforward 15-20 years, Isla Fisher makes it as an actress and is Sacha Baron Cohen's girlfriend, and the name reappears in the magazines etc. Result: you get lots of people naming their DDs Isla...

... Or I could be over thinking this.

sorry I agree with spider!

i like isla...

im not sure if it would date,

iona is pretty and similar if you want something like though...

LaundryLyne · 02/08/2010 09:06

Isla is OK, but I prefer Emily and Lucy.

Haliborange · 02/08/2010 09:12

Isla is having something of a "moment".

It is pretty, but you need to be careful with your surname as it can sound like a holiday destination in the wrong circumstances.

Emily and Lucy also nice, but all quite pretty-little-girly IMO. What about Lucia?

3plusbump · 02/08/2010 09:24

They are all pretty names - I possibly prefer Isla of the three.

I don't know whether you are concerned about them being popular names?

At school there are at least 2 Emily's and 2 Lucy's per class although there are none at pre-school.

There are no little girls called Isla at school but there are 2 at DS3's pre-school....

All perfectly lovely names though...

pointydog · 02/08/2010 09:35

I like Isla.

5DollarShake · 02/08/2010 10:05

Isla's lovely - but I definitely think it will date your child to being born around this time, the way Joanne, Karen and Claire date girls of our (well, my!) age.

plonker · 02/08/2010 10:13

My dd is Lucy and my neice is Emily - they're lovely names

My Lucy is the only Lucy in her class (and only 1 of 2 in the whole school) and Emily is the only Emily in her class too. So not overly popular.

Isla is pretty too. You can't go wrong

splatt · 02/08/2010 13:56

Thank you all.
I think it can be a bit tricky working out what is going to be popular right now. There may be 2 Emilys and 2 Lucy in a reception class but they were names 5 years ago, so doesn't mean that there are loads right now, does it?

We have 10 weeks to go so there is bound to be plenty of debate between now and then and haven't reached anywhere on boys names!! Really is a minefield!!
