Dorian

I LOVE this name for a boy but DH keeps going on about that awful woman from Bird Of A Feather. I have pointed out that only people over 30 remember that show and none of his peers will know the link, and that is the main thing. I mean, who cares what their Mum's mates think about their name? What counts is that you don't get made fun of at school right?

Any thoughts on Dorian? Only downside is that DS1 is called 'John' and I guess together they sound a bit odd (one very plain name and one slightly out there one).

Anyone else got two siblings names that don't 'go'? Does it matter?

It can be for a girl or a boy but the only Dorian I've heard of is the BOAF one.

John with Dorian would remind me of the "John Dory" fish!

What other names do you like?

shumway · 28/07/2010 16:27

Makes me think of The Picture of Dorian Grey.

ShatnersBassoon · 28/07/2010 16:34

The naughty man in The Mask was called Dorian.

I quite like it, though it reminds me of The Picture of Dorian Grey too.

Btw, the lead character in Scrubs is John Dorian (JD), so that might put you off.

Captainj1 · 28/07/2010 17:22

I must admit the first thing i thought of was BOAF but that's because i'm 35! I guess it would get shortened to 'dor' too so you have to think about whether that would bother you. I think with names you just have to go with what you and OH agree on, and to hell with everyone else, there will always be some that like it and some that don't!

SirBoobAlot · 28/07/2010 17:40

Should be okay as long as you never let him get a portrait done

Though seriously, I don't think John and Dorian go well together. Too many people watch Scrubs.

MummyLovesSadie · 28/07/2010 18:46

Dorian Grey & BOAF for me too. He'd probably get called Doreen at school..... kids are so mean!

LetThereBeRock · 28/07/2010 19:08

He'll spend half his life going 'No, not Doreen. It's Dorian!'.

I don't like the name at all.

Rockbird · 28/07/2010 19:53

I love Dorien from BOAF so it's not a bad association for me but I do think of her when I hear the name. As you say though, none of his school friends will know her.

mumtojohn · 28/07/2010 20:40

Ah thanks all.

Hadn't thought of John Dory or Scrubs.

We like Albert too so we might compromise and have Dorian as his middle name (DH got his way with 'Gabriel', which I don't like, as John's middle name but I vetoed it as a first name).

Albert I guess goes a bit better with John, although I wish it wasn't so common. Obviously, John is the most common male name in the English langauge but I don't think there are many youngsters with that name so I like it for that reason.

Might be a girl anyway (but I am pretty convinced it's another boy!).

Albert is nice and would go well with John

I quite like Dorian myself and it is one of the options for my DS2. It is nice, greek origin name and since I am not British, I have no associations with whoever-Dorian.

I also like Herman (lovely German name), but people also have associations with the name, so probably no-no then (a shame though).
