Alexander or Theodore?

emmyloo2 · 27/07/2010 09:45

Any thoughts?

Nickname for Alexander would be Alex and for Theodore would be Theo and Teddy just for fun.

I know both are popular in the UK. Is Theodore trying a bit hard? Alexander is more classic and less likely to date but more common.

Thanks!

I would go with Alex - but then I'm biased as my daughter is called Alexa!

PaintingTheFence · 27/07/2010 10:34

I like both, but prefer Alexander.

nikkidale · 27/07/2010 10:47

My son is called Theo, not Theodore - its on his Birth Certificate. Just thought I would throw that in!!

emmyloo2 · 27/07/2010 10:51

Thanks everyone. I really like both and love Theo in particular as a nickname.

My DH prefers Alexander at the moment.

I am biased too as mine is called Alexander (and we always call him Alexander never Alex).

emmyloo2 · 28/07/2010 09:28

Bump!

Anyone prefer Theo is is Alexander the clear winner?

Much prefer Theo. Not keen on Theodore. Theo is a good name on it's own. Not keen on Alexander, hate Al. Alex abit unisex. Just my opinions though, both are perfectly good names.

JuJuu · 28/07/2010 12:07

I think you are so right when you say that Theo is less classic and will date. Theo is on my own list (my DH loves it) but I find it a bit twee if I'm honest!

Alexander is one of those names where you can't go worng.

emmyloo2 · 28/07/2010 12:35

Thanks JuJuu. That is my concern. I am also considering Edward which might be a nice compromise between Alexander and Theodore. Could still have cute nn of Ed and Teddy which I adore..

I like Teddy. Why not such a cute and cool name.

Magnima · 28/07/2010 12:57

My son's middle name is Alexander. The nickname for Alexander in Scotland is Sandy! Not sure why. He has a slightly unusual first name so we wanted something classic for the middle name. I also like Theo,so no help at all! Love Thea for a girl.

LaundryLyne · 28/07/2010 13:28

Edward is another very nice name

NiceCuppaT · 28/07/2010 13:35

Much prefer Theo or Teddy, I really dislike the name Alex!

zenoushka · 28/07/2010 14:11

I love the name Alexander. Edward is really nice too.

muminthemiddle · 28/07/2010 14:22

I prefer Alexander.

I know someone who has twins with both.
I think Theo is very popular now, though I like it, whereas Alex is timeless.

I like Edward best

emmyloo2 · 28/07/2010 15:30

Thanks everybody!

I think they are all lovely names although my only concern is with Theo being a bit "now". For some reason though, Alexander doesn't seem as cute for a little boy as Edward but my dh loves Alexander. Edward is my father's and grandfather's name so that is also another good reason to choose it.

decisions, decisions.....

Alexander nicer than Edward IMO. Edward having a revival of it's own.

Mingg · 28/07/2010 16:45

How about both - Theo Alexander?

DilysPrice · 28/07/2010 16:50

Both good - much respect for chosing proper bloody names for birth certificate - Theo is a lovely shortening, but not an actual name.

I know an Alexander who I refer to in private as Alex-the-tosser, but apart from that it's fine.
