Hello,

I am due today (!) and we have a girls name decided upon (thanks for all your comments on my last post) and we have also decided on a boys name, Jack.

This is I know, the most popular name, according to all the stats but I have only come across one myself, aged 4 and then a number of adults.

I've loved this name from word go, and it is a family name too but I keep having niggles about the possibility of their being many little Jack's throughout school.

This shouldn't matter should it? To me it is a classic, timeless name and I guess it is popular for a reason.

I'd love to hear from mums of Jack's or those also considering the name. Or just your comments in general!

It is a lovely name. It is very popular. In my group of friends there are 3. On a beach recently most little boys being called for were called Jack. If that doesnt bother you go for it!

It's a nice name.

But being someone who has a very common name in RL I have to say it's a PITA, especially at school.

Its lovely. A classic solid name, and actually there is only one in my DS' year which is 2 classes

Dont worry about it being popular. I picked Sam and there is also only 1 of him and that is also insanely popular apparently

I like Jack, was going to use it for DS1 after my Grandad. Then my mum pointed out he was actually called John. Jack was apparently the standard nickname for John and never a "real" name until recently.

Lovely name - go for it. It's been number 1 for years but I don't know many Jacks - only a couple at my kids school. Loads of Olivers and Finlays though.

There are many Jacks where we live (in East Anglia) - but maybe not so many where you are. I did wander onto the bounty naming website and there's a 'what's most popular in your region' (not the exact title, but you know what I mean) section there. Might be worth checking it out if you're worried.

Loads of Jacks in Devon, mostly age 4-8 I would guess.
Newborns are Finn and Oliver.

We also have lots of Jacks in our area, I know 6 who are dc's friends at school or children of close friends. If popularity doesn't bother you then it won't matter.

Personally for me I prefer more unusual names and especially at school your ds may become known by the children as Jack (insert surname) rather than Jack on it's own.

I have a Jack (9). He is one of six Jack's in his school year. I still love the name. My own mother decided to give me a rather 'distinctive' name, and I loathed growing up so instantly identifiable. I am forever spelling it, explaining it and being asked about it. I gave DS2 a less popular name, but one I thought would be well known enough not to require spelling etc. Unfortunately, a programme on CBBC decided to misspell the name to fit the show

We nearly called DS Jack but avoided it because we thought it was too popular. I haven't met a single Jack in the 3 1/2 years since. Go for it, it's a great name.

Lots of Jacks here (Here). In my tiny village there are 4 Jacks and a Jake, all of pre-school age.

I have a very common name for my age group, there were 5 of us in my year at school! It really never bothered me, but people did tend to call us by our first name plus the first letter of our surnames, would that bother you?

I only know 2 Jacks by the way, both lovely little boys and a nice classic name.

Ds1 is Jack. Dh's dad was Jack and as soon as we realised i was expecting, he asked if it was o.k. to call him after his dad. I said yes and liked the name Jack. Was not a mn'er then. did not look into baby names. when i joined mn and saw all the baby names threads and only then realised that Jack had been top of the lists for about 4 years, I was gutted. felt a right twat.
I still like it. but so wish it hadn't been top of the list. please god let it fall soon.
there are 3 Jack's in ds1's year of 60.

we too are Jack D. there is a Jack G and a Jack C.
doesn't seem to bother them.

There are 3 Jacks in DS's class (Y1) and they get called Jack A, Jack S and Jack D.

It depends if this popularity bothers you. It would bother me .

I'd choose John which is nice but underused. Then you can always use Jack as a nickname.

Yes, it's been the no.1 boy's name for about 10yrs or so but I haven't met another baby with the same name and in DD's school of nearly 100 kids there is only 1 Jack.

I did dither over whether to name him Jack or not but it was a name we both agreed on and it really suits him. I think it's a name that will grow with him - nice for a baby,child and adult too. I'd rather he had a popular traditional name than a name that was popular at the time but became a bit chavvy in later years.

No. It's been the most popular baby's name for about 15 years, in the Uk and Ireland and it's really popular in the US and Australia too. Can you imagine in 40 years time? "jack' will just be a generic name for man.

In 2008 in England alone over 8000 boys given the name Jack... I personally wouldn't use it on that basis. The whole point of naming someone/something is to identify it/him/her and imo there are already so, so many Jacks out there....
Plus, there are SO many lovely names from which to choose. Isn't there any other name you love equally?
