Florence

Have loved this name for ages BUT am now wondering if it's a bit naff due to Florence and the Machine's popularity. DP thinks this is nonsense but that's because he listens to nothing but 1960s Northern Soul and is completely out of touch.

Forget if you like this name or not please (!). Can you just tell me if you think it's going to be too common or too naff or if you'd assume I'd named my child after an indie pop group?!

Thanks!

Not common or naff and I'd assume you were a fan of the Magic Roundabout (showing my age). I love it.

Colliecross · 26/07/2010 13:08

I think of it as an old-fashioned classic.
What machine do you mean?

flamingnora · 26/07/2010 13:09

Hi Mejon. You bet I was a fan of the magic roundabout and I love that you jumped to that conclusion!

Super - lovely name My grandma was called Florence and my niece has it as a middle name, i love it as i think it will suit at all ages.

SherbetDibDab · 26/07/2010 13:20

It's lovely.

The name was gaining in popularity before Florence came along with her machine. If anything Florence Welch may have slowed things down a bit.

redrobin · 26/07/2010 13:24

florence divine, go for it

flamingnora · 26/07/2010 13:29

It's lovely. I've got one. She's quite lovely (sometimes).

Tuschinski · 26/07/2010 13:38

I love it.
I don't think it's naff at all. I might be out out touch too though as I'd think Magic Roundabout before the machine and I wouldn't have thought they were that big a band to have any great influence.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 26/07/2010 13:41

I like Florence. I think it's one of those names that's gained in popularity over the last few years without becoming madly popular. And it was my grandmother's name, so am definitely considering it as a middle name myself.

Bessie123 · 26/07/2010 13:52

Florence is a really lovely name

ponceydog · 26/07/2010 13:54

I think of it as rather prim and frumpy but it is an in name these days (from before F&TM).

ExitPursuedByABear · 26/07/2010 13:56

Love love love it. And I would think Florence Nightingale before any of these modern upstarts. And you do know she had a sister called Parthenope..............

clouddragon · 26/07/2010 14:02

i love it but know 3 baby florences born in the last 4 months!

emmyloo2 · 26/07/2010 14:12

I love Florence and don't associate it was Florence Welch. It is becoming more popular though and I do wonder whether it will date. But it's a lovely name.

PosieParker · 26/07/2010 14:12

Love it.

JuJuu · 26/07/2010 14:24

It is becoming very popular I think and think it is due to Florence and the Machine!

I know about 3 under 1's named Florence

freerangeeggs · 27/07/2010 11:27

I love Florence. I have one in my class at school who is just wonderful and makes me love it even more. She gets called Floss, which is a great nickname IMO.

wildspinning · 27/07/2010 21:17

It's a lovely name, and pretty popular - I know three Florences under 2, and heard it called out in the leisure centre today.

It's like Martha, Grace, Rose, Amelia, Molly, Lily, Betsy, Eve, Ava etc - a lovely old name which has come back in fashion.

issy123 · 28/07/2010 21:02

Lovely

flamingnora · 28/07/2010 21:42

Thanks so much all for honest feedback! I'm feeling good about the name again!

We very nearly called our 4th Florence it was the favourite name right up until when she was born.

Then she just didn't suit it - it didn't feel right when we looked at her.

It took us four days and a long list before we actually named her in the end.

We didn't choose it because of the band though - both of us had fond memories of great aunts named Florence.

I think it's just one of those lovely old names making a comeback.

MrsC2010 · 29/07/2010 13:55

I love it, DH vetoed.
