Hello

We're really struggling with boys names having had two boys already.

Have just discovered that I really like Ezra.

Would appreciate opinions please.

The problem is that our surname starts with Ir so doesn't flow particularly well. Does that really matter?

I like Ezra

I'm afraid I agree it doesn't flow particularly well with your surname. Are there any similar names you like?

Elias/Eli
Ezekiel/Zeke
Elijah
Elliot
Edwin
Ellis
Isaiah
Azariah
Xavier
Alexander/X ander

I don't thnk that you need to be Jewish to use names like Reuben or Rachel, but Ezra is a bit different, and special imo.

Ezra is lovely!

bronze · 25/07/2010 13:56

I love Ezra
DH turned it down from my list as he said it sounded too girly

freerangeeggs · 25/07/2010 16:27

I love Ezra. I wouldn't consider it to be a solely Jewish name at all - in fact in the US it's pretty widespread.

A similar name I love is Asa. Sadly both Ezra and Asa were my 'secret' names but I keep seeing them mentioned on name boards! Ah well :D

Tuschinski · 25/07/2010 19:06

I think it's a bit girly too

randomimposter · 25/07/2010 20:18

Not girly at all IMO. Love it.

What are your other DS names?

polkadottytotty · 25/07/2010 20:37

Thanks for the feedback everyone and for the other suggestions Paintingthefence.

My DS's are Fyfe and Harper - both unusual and would like something in a similar vein.

Its the only boys name I've found that we both really like so far - the other one we both quite like is Jeremiah (Jem for short) which would work better with our surname but I think I have my heart set on Ezra now.

Ezra is a really nice name and of course I don't know your whole surname to say for sure whether it goes together well. Jeremiah/Jem is great too You've got two excellent choices there!

PaintingTheFence · 25/07/2010 21:02

Have you chosen a middle name? Jeremiah Ezra or Ezra Jeremiah would both work nicely.

bronze · 26/07/2010 00:33

Is that because the books go Ezra Nehemiah so we are used to those sounds flwing

JuJuu · 26/07/2010 00:35

I really like it. Have never heard of anyone named Ezra before so very unique!

PaintingTheFence · 26/07/2010 00:46

Hadn't thought of that, bronze! Come to think of it Nehemiah is a great name though

bronze · 26/07/2010 10:02

It is isn't it

Ems83 · 26/07/2010 20:06

I love Ezra I wanted to call our LO Ezra after the poet Ezra Pound but she was a girl x

SE13Mummy · 26/07/2010 20:41

I think Ezra is a great name and know a 4-year-old Ezra who is far from girly. It's Hebrew in origin but I see no reason why it can't be used by people who aren't Jewish (the Ezra I know isn't Jewish), but then I have a Miriam and, since her birth, have been asked by lots of people if I'm Jewish. I'm not!

Asher, Eli and Shem are other excellent Hebrew names. How about Jedediah (Jed)?

dexifehatz · 03/08/2010 22:21

Ezra is a fantastic name and it was top of our list if our last baby was a boy. I love the'z' factor and I had a bit of a crush on Vampire Weekends singer Ezra Konisberg.

meadowlarks · 03/08/2010 22:53

Ezra's nice. Have you considered Isaac? It's a beautiful name and in a similar vein.

nooka · 04/08/2010 05:14

We were going to call ds2 Ezra, and referred to the bump as Ezzie for months. ds2 turned out to be a girl so dh called his server Ezzie instead
We did decide that we'd call the baby Richard Ezra just in case Ezra was too hard to carry off (my father is known by his middle name for similar reasons).

Ezra Pound was a bit of an inspiration, but I just think it is a very cool sounding name.

Patsy99 · 04/08/2010 09:24

I wouldn't think Ezra was necessarily a Jewish name. In fact wasn't Ezra Pound notoriously anti-semitic?
