Just received an email from an old friend whose newborn daughter is called Oana. How do you pronounce it? Is it simply oh-anna? Or more of a 'w' sound after the 'O'? I had never heard of it. Thanks!

No idea. Very strange choice.

tbh, I thought so too, Reasonable. I first thought it was a typo, but it's repeated a few times in the email.

Never heard of it but I would guess o-ahh-na not ew-nah as Oona (ew-nah) is my Aunt's name spelt Oona!

BertieBasset · 21/07/2010 20:37

I'd go for Oh-anna or Oh-arna

Bit of an odd one

5DollarShake · 21/07/2010 22:15

I am guessing O-ahh-na. Haven't heard of it before.

I haven't heard of it but would guess Owner!

I know a Romanian person with this name, same spelling, pronounced wan-a.

mathanxiety · 22/07/2010 00:38

Yes, Romanian name, short for Ioana, a version of Johanna or Joanna.

alexisfaith · 22/07/2010 07:47

Ah! Wan-a makes sense. Friend and her DH are from the west coast of the Scottish Highlands, where we don't tend to go for 'out there' or 'made up' names (naming children after grandparents etc gives us a small name pool!) so I'm glad to learn of Oana's origins. Thanks guys.
