Angelie

Love it but hate the nickname Ang/Angie (sorry to any Angies out there - just don't feel it suits a little girl).

Wondered about using the nickname Annie, but really would want to use the full name - the nickname would really be for the sake of others/school, etc.

Any other nicknames or is Angie inevitable?

Annie on it's own is far nicer than Angelie in my opinion.

Your dd will forever be having to explain that her name isn't Angela.

miamix · 21/07/2010 12:21

T0he nickname thing is the reason we aren't happy about using it as a first name. At the moment we have it as a middle name (would never be shortened and only used in telling offs and graduation ) but just wanted to explore the options for nicknames.

In terms of explaining it's Angelie rather than Angela, I was a Maria and occasionally had to correct those who called me Marie, but it wasn't bothersome. The nickname thing is our main concern.

Could you spell is Anjalie? I know one of these! As far as I know her parents have never had an issue with people saying Angela or shortening it.

ReasonableDoubt · 21/07/2010 12:27

I just think that, if you hate Angie, Angelie is incredibly close and really not much different...

zenoushka · 21/07/2010 12:36

Anjali/Anjalie are quite popular Indian names

miamix · 21/07/2010 12:40

Thanks smokey, don't feel the spelling flows as well though

Reasonable doubt, it is close, but the 'el' sound in the middle takes it far enough away from Angie for me to love it

Zenoushka, that's interesting - I think Angelie is French! Nice how they are spelled differently and from different cultures yet sound the same

Miamix - that is interesting! I didn't realise it was also a French name. I have 2 cousins called Anjali!

miamix · 21/07/2010 12:55

Apparently French/Italian. We thought the Italian link was nice because my OH is half Italian.

How about Angeline, with a very soft g, more like a french pronunciation?

miamix · 22/07/2010 09:51

Angeline is pretty, and is the name of a PJ Harvey song... and the original first name we picked (to have Angelie as a middle name for) is also a name in a PJ Harvey song How funny!

angelique is pretty, i know one.

mamaloco · 22/07/2010 10:24

Angelie is lovely. No body will nickname her if you introduce her by her full name.
I have an angelique nobody call her ange or angie, but then she is 6 months. so no playground freinds are able to talk yet. I know some anjali too (pronounciation is the same as the french angelie).
DH vetoed angeline (too close to brangelina)

hester · 22/07/2010 10:36

I know one little Angelie; it wouldn't occur to me to call her Angie or Angela.

miamix · 22/07/2010 10:39

Not keen on the harsh 'q' in Angelique, but thanks for the comment becca.

hester - how old is this little Angelie? I know that family wouldn't nickname her (OH's family are Italian and have amazing names like Adonai and Sophia all used in full), it is the school days that worry me

OP posts:
mamaloco · 22/07/2010 11:09

I am afraid school days are out of your hands. she might want to become an angie for her freinds or will stick to angelie, nobody will call her angie without her approval.

hoofhearted · 22/07/2010 11:17

Its a popular Indian name

Otherwise it sounds like you have left something off the end!

CakeandRoses · 23/07/2010 10:31

I love Angelie too but DH wouldn't go for it. I didn't get great feedback on the name when I posted it on here, most seemed to prefer Angeline etc.

As others have said you and family can stick to the full name but she might love the nn Angie when she's older so you'd have to accept that.
