I heard a little girl called this at the weekend.

I thought it was really cute but is it a name in it's own right or a NN for something else?

Not planning on using it, I'm having a boy. Just thoght it was quite unusual and pretty.

Another one with Victorian scullery maid connotations.

I always thought it was a nickname for Josephine?

Eppie in Silas Marner was short from Hephzibah. I love both Eppie and Effie but am not keen on any of the longer versions. Penelope was suggested to be for Eppie and Stephanie for Eppie but both seem a stretch. Also a bit iffey about Effie sounding too much like effin'

I know a Effie and this one is short for Elfreda, I think it's lovely and works really well.

Short for Euphemia which I'm not too keen on but like Effie. I know one with Euphemia on bc and one with Effie on bc.

I know an Effie whose name is Euphemia.

I'm Effie, it's short for Frances Emily (FE...Effie)

I love both names, use my actual name (Frances) professionally but due to facebook most people end up calling me Effie anyway, I think I need to grow up a bit more before I become Frances again, even though Effie only really began to stick when I went to uni

Avoid if you are planning on travelling to/have any links to South Africa. Effie is afrikans for condom!

Colliecross · 26/07/2010 14:20

Oh no EmmaKate! I know a very beautiful 12-year-old Effie.
