Tallis? A woman in a magazine I was reading said she named her son this after Thomas Tallis. Google is claiming it's a french girl's name, but I don't think it's awful on a boy either. I just wondered what MN would make of it

Not keen

LuluF · 19/07/2010 19:08

There's a 'local' band when we live called 'Tallis'. Bit of a floaty skirt, folk band. Not sure of the origins...

flopsy1974 · 19/07/2010 19:36

Not my cup of tea I'm afraid.

BelligerentGhoul · 19/07/2010 19:45

Not fond. It reminds me of names like Travis, which I heartily dislike. Apologies to any parents of Travis-like names on here.

CapitalText · 19/07/2010 19:56

I like it and the idea behind it too

LilRedWG · 19/07/2010 19:57

Not for me.

one L less and it's a well known library information system.

MrsVWoolf - Yeah, that's what I thought at first. It does seem quite feminine to me, but suprisingly enough, a quick search of the 2008 baby name list said there were 3 boys called Tallis that year, and no girls.

I think the "feminine" sound is probably because it rhymes with Alice?

meadowlarks · 19/07/2010 21:09

Probably. I still like it though.

I think of Atonement straight away. I'm not keen either - but then am generally not keen on surnames as first names.

autodidact · 19/07/2010 21:13

My sister's lovely cat was called Tallis. Short for Taliesin (sp?).

Mahraih · 19/07/2010 21:15

For some reason it seems a bit unfinished (?!) to me ... not sure why. Possibly because it has that surname thing about it.

But if I heard it enough time, I'd probably think it was quite cool, and original.

In a few years nobody will remember that awful McEwan anyway.
