What do we think?

Someone I know is due in the next couple of weeks, and this is top of their list, but the possible nick names aren't good.

Or is there a nice nick name?

So no one has an opinion?

I don't like it personally.

It's like Amanda but um ...well..not.

CapitalText · 17/07/2010 21:25

Much prefer Amanda, or Clementine.

miamix · 17/07/2010 21:26

I first read "Amadine" - Amandine doesn't seem to flow, to me. Sorry.

Also, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amandine - quite a culinary choice

violetsmile · 17/07/2010 21:52

Not heard of it before. Is it pronounced AmandIne or Amandin?

I quite like it.

paisleyleaf · 17/07/2010 21:54

Or Amandalini

Wouldn't the nickname just be Mandy?

bigTillyMint · 17/07/2010 21:55

Nice if you're French, bit WAGish if not.

LynetteScavo · 17/07/2010 22:00

But is it French? The soon to be parents seem to think so. Neither of them are French.

I think it's pronounced Arm-on-deen.

mopsyflopsy · 18/07/2010 10:10

I like the look and sound of it. But it somehow reminds me of almonds.

Ineedsomesleep · 18/07/2010 10:23

I don't think you have to worry too much about being French to use a French name. My sister has a French name and I've got a Scottish one. We both live in England and its never presented any problems!

Ineedsomesleep · 18/07/2010 10:26

According to this it is a French name, but a bit of a nutty choice?

LynetteScavo · 18/07/2010 19:16

They've now decided against it. Which is good, IMO,as it really doesn't go with their sur name.

OP posts:
legallyblond · 19/07/2010 16:12

Its pretty common in France... I know three!
I actually quite like it, but agree, odd choice if you are not French!

Its pronounced Ah-mon-deen. All three that I know use Aman (pronounced Ah-mon) as their nn.

It really is normal en France!

zenoushka · 20/07/2010 12:16

John Malkovich named his daughter Amandine! I quite like it, but wouldn't work with our surname.

LittleSilver · 20/07/2010 13:30

Sounds like a biscuit.

moaningminniewhingesagain · 20/07/2010 13:34

I thought it was Amantadine. Which is an antiviral drug. So er, no, it would not be a great choice IMHO.

Adair · 20/07/2010 13:39

Phew! So glad they didn't go with a name they liked that you hated...

Have you given them the list of acceptable alternatives yet?

LynetteScavo · 20/07/2010 16:07

Er..read the thread properly!

I really like the name Amandine (although I would want to spell it Almandine, which has a different meaning)

It was the mum-to-be that was struggling with nick names (and I agree with her, as I couldn't think of any really good ones), hence my OP asking "is there a nice nick name?"

Believe me, it doesn't go with their sur name, and they already have a list of alternatives, which they (wisely) haven't disclosed. But I'm so excited to know what they decide on!!!!!!

Adair · 20/07/2010 16:45

Ok, point taken.

I guess it was the 'what do we think?' that got my back up. And I obviously misread what seemed to me to be a subtle 'isn't this awful?' tone.

FWIW I like Amandine too. And lots of nicknames I would have thought - Ammy/Mandy/Deenie or something completely unrelated or unpredictable as is often the way with nicknames.

Amandinefau · 20/07/2010 19:59

My name is Amandine and I'm a French expat'. People are fine with it, I do get a lot of compliments actually. But I guess it is a bit unusual and nobody can spell it properly.

Haliborange · 20/07/2010 20:04

I think it is beautiful, really elegant, and am stashing it away in case there's ever a 3rd Halibaby.

I love it. What about mimi as a nickname?

LynetteScavo · 20/07/2010 20:48

Oohhh! Mimi is a faboulous nn!
