Arabic names?

Swazzee · 16/07/2010 15:16

My husband is Arabic, and we've agreed to go with Arabic names for our twins (due December). Don't know the sexes yet, but anyone got any nice name ideas for either sex?

I'd quite like something which could sound British, or could be shortened to sound British...

Haroun is my fave for a boy

Knew a Samara at college

Swazzee · 16/07/2010 16:20

Thanks Cheese. I like Lila - hadn't heard of that before, and have always been keen on Samir anyway.

Champagne, Samara is nice. Not sure about Haroun though - but it may grow on me!

I have 2 friends with tunisian husbands. They have:

Nadia
Yasmine

Very interchangeable between english and arabic i think.

Ameera
Yousef

One of the husbands is called Ethem- which i quite like. Also Athem is a friend of theirs. (Not sure if you spell it like that, but that's what it sounds like.

My favourite by far though was a girl i taught in college- Ankita.

EricNorthmansmistress · 22/07/2010 20:44

Laila, Sara, Zahara, Naima, Zaina, Aliyah, Amira, Merieme.

frigatebird · 22/07/2010 21:34

Twins, lucky you!

We have a Meriem. Clearly everyone says loudly, SORRY MARIAN? WAS IT MARRIAN THAT YOU SAID? but I just get used to it.

Beegey · 23/07/2010 00:43

Zane, Hassan, Ferris, Adam for boys

Amira, Safia (Could become Sofia) Nadia, Yasmin/a Layla, Sheharazade

Good luck!

Swazzee · 23/07/2010 10:11

Wow, thanks everyone. So many suggestions and definitely some in there I'd not heard before and really like. We'd already been considering Adem for a boy, so am happy to see Adam mentioned a few times. I really like a lot of the names beginning with Z too.

We're having a scan next week (I'll be nearly 22 weeks then) and hopefully will be able to find out then whether they're boys or girls, or one of each!

Good luck with your scan, keep us posted

Beegey · 23/07/2010 19:56

My little Algerian/Egyptian cousins are Adam and Hana - cute!

Good luck with your scan, how exciting!

reup · 23/07/2010 20:00

MoppingMummy · 23/07/2010 22:55

Hanna, Sana, Adem.

Swazzee · 29/07/2010 11:11

Thanks for all your suggestions, but it looks like I'll have to discard all the girls' names now - the scan showed they're both boys!

My two favourite names so far are Adem and Rafi...

OP posts:
zenoushka · 29/07/2010 11:45

Adham

Firawla · 29/07/2010 16:12

congrats, 2 boys will be fun
Adem and Rafi are both nice

CupcakesHay · 29/07/2010 20:59

I saw a girls name I loved, and it derives from Arabic - Jessamy (jasime flower). Also a friend had a baby recently with her hubby who's Lebanese - opted for Yasmina.

I also like Rafik for boy (not sure of spelling)

(I live in Damascus by the way)

capucine · 30/07/2010 09:25

Malaïka and Dounia
No hesitation, I am expecting a girl for december and Malaïka is at the top of our list.
for boy
Farouk
