Caspar or Casper?

Just under two weeks to go before DC2 makes his or her entrance to the world and I'm just doing my final hospital bag check, newborn clothes wash etc. I thought I'd also better make use of this time to be sure of the name we'd picked out for a boy!

We're pretty set on Caspar, unless he really doesn't look like one when he arrives, in which case it'll be back to the drawing board time

The only thing is, I was sure about the spelling with an A as this seemed more correct somehow and less associated with the cartoon (spelt with an E) but I've noticed when I or others have posted about 'Caspar' most people reply and write 'Casper'.

Should I stick to Caspar and just accept that we/DS will spend our lives correcting the spelling or would Casper be better/easier?

Caspar, definitely

There are lots of names that people can't spell, doesn't mean you have to pander to them!

Completely agree with Castille.

It's Caspar.

Thank you all and congratulations to Imarried's friend on her new baby Casper

Castille - but is Casper an incorrrect spelling rather than just a preference?

The A spelling is more common I think, my ds has the E version and is sometimes misspelt, but it's no big deal. Use the one you prefer, fab name either way

castille · 14/07/2010 13:59

I don't think the E spelling is incorrect, but it looks wrong to me so prefer the A.

CakeandRoses · 14/07/2010 14:08

Castille - ah, I see. I'm not sure why I got it into my head to begin with that Caspar was the 'right' spelling so was hoping you'd enlighten me!

and weirdly, I think the E spelling looks nicer in a way.

jenny - presuming you meant the A version is more 'common' as in more usual? But it's a good point, whichever version we choose, it'll probably get misspelled! Out of interest, do you get a good reaction to the name generally?

According to my research, Casper is a variant of Caspar, which is of Persian origin.

So the A spelling is arguably the original spelling, if that matters to you.

jennycomelately · 14/07/2010 15:11

Oh yes, more usual I mean

We've always had a good reaction to it from friends/random people, my son says "why did you give me such a stupid name" but he's a teenager so I don't take too much notice...he's the only one in a large school with the name and likes being unique! It doesn't tend to get shortened which is also good.
