What can 'Bob' be short for?

I don't think there's any other boy's name you could logically shorten to Bob? Just out of curiosity, why do you ask??

DuelingFanjo · 13/07/2010 14:04

Because I like the name Bob and am considering it for my baby if it's a boy but wondered what other things people might think he was called if we name him just Bob.

I've heard Bobby be used as a boys first name. I asked parents what it was short for, and they'd christened him Bobby.

DuelingFanjo · 13/07/2010 14:10

I really dislike Bobby to be honest. I guess there's a worry that people will lengthen a name like Bob to Bobby isn't there.

Roberto
Bobbin
Norbert
Dobby

swanandduck · 13/07/2010 14:21

Bobbin and Dobby??? .

Jamieandhismagictorch · 13/07/2010 14:22

Yes, there are 3 Dobby's in my DS's class - they have to call them Dobby 1, Dobby 2 and Dobby 3

thumbwitch · 13/07/2010 14:23

Robinson
Bobbolino
Robespierre
Rigoberto (at a push, or you could go for Bert instead)
Bourbon (this is a genuine name!)

Rob is a much nicer short form...

swanandduck · 13/07/2010 14:25

I'm amazed Jamie. I honestly would have thought that was a horse's name. Where does it originate from?

thumbwitch · 13/07/2010 14:27

It's an old shortening of Robert, apparently. And also the name of the house elf in HArry Potter - when did that come out? Would it fit the timings?

DuelingFanjo · 13/07/2010 14:34

Not into Rob.

If anything it would just be Bob.

sethstarkaddersmum · 13/07/2010 17:34

Robson, as in Robson Greene.

we have a Robert but ds1 calls him Nobby Nob Nob

Hedwig3 · 13/07/2010 19:34

I like Bob.

pranma · 13/07/2010 21:01

Robson-like Robson Green the actor

LuluF · 14/07/2010 13:53

Bob reminds me of Twin Peaks...

seeker · 14/07/2010 13:58

Oh don't be silly, you can't call a baby Bob.

Call him Robert, then he's got a whole range of shortenings to choose from. Including Bob.

valiumSingleton · 14/07/2010 16:20

What's wrong with Robert ? Robbie is nicer than Bob imo.

valiumSingleton · 14/07/2010 16:21

Battery Operated Boyfriend (BOB)
a term used more in the USA than the UK I believe. Don't shoot the messenger.

00000000000000 · 14/07/2010 16:22

Yes, there are 3 Dobby's in my DS's class - they have to call them Dobby 1, Dobby 2 and Dobby 3 ???

i think you are yanking our chains!

please don't call your baby bob. it's silly.

hocuspontas · 14/07/2010 16:23

Call him anything you like and just use Bob as a nickname. There are no rules on using Bob!

EvilTwins · 14/07/2010 16:24

Kate.

Blackadder anyone?

EvilTwins · 14/07/2010 16:24

Or was that Kate short for Bob? My memory fails me.

00000000000000 · 14/07/2010 16:24

ye evil twins i did think that!!!
