Can I get your opinions please on the name Shoshanna? I think its lovely but I want to make sure that I'm getting the pronounciation right.
I met someone with this name recently who pronounced it Shoh-sha-na, but I'm sure that in Inglorious Basterds its spelt the same way and pronounced more like Sosh-ha-na
But I may just be misremembering the film...
Anyone?

Have you read this on imdb

"Incorrectly regarded as goofs: SPOILER: Though Mélanie Laurent's character's first name is spelled Shosanna, the various characters throughout the film pronounce her name "Shoshana". Most notably Col. Landa when he shouts "Au Revoir, Shoshana!" as she runs away after her family is killed. In fact, the character's name is clearly spelled "Shoshanna" in the portfolio carried by Col. Landa and which he uses for a checklist for the Jews hidden in that home. The discrepancy between the spelling in the film's credits and the spelling/pronunciation in the film itself can only be explained as deliberate."

I like Johanna as a name, dont like Shoshanna.

GladioliBuckets · 11/07/2010 21:20

I know its ancient and everything but the Shana bit sounds v 80s to me.

sedgiebaby · 11/07/2010 21:31

I liked shoshanna too but what made me think twice is that I'm on an intl baby board and it is in the US considered a jewish name (nothing wrong with that but I'm not jewish) and a bit dated.
I would expect it to be pronounced Shoh-sha-na

Cake · 11/07/2010 21:45

It's considered a Jewish name in the US because it IS a Jewish name.

I like it.

For Jewish babies.

BrittanyBeers · 12/07/2010 22:33

Shurely shome mishtake?

Sorry.
I've never heard of this name in the UK.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 13/07/2010 00:02

I know a Shashanna. Her sister is Savannah. I really don't like it, sorry. And it probably will be shortened.

seenyertoeslately · 13/07/2010 01:02

I quite like the name.

but I LOVE the name BustleInYourHedgerow. I always thought that it was such a funny line in the song, conjuring up such a strange image

Sorry to hijack.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 14/07/2010 22:09

Thanks Was getting frustrated trying to find a name, and Stairway was in my head. I'm rather suprised nobody has suggested it as a baby name in this topic yet, TBH.

SuzysZoo · 14/07/2010 22:44

It is unusual but it seems quite hard to pronounce. Does it sound like a drunk person saying Suzanna?

SirBoobAlot · 14/07/2010 22:55

It sounds and looks made up, IMO.

JonahB · 14/07/2010 23:27

I knew 2 Shoshana's when i was a child. Both Jewish. They pronounced it Shoh-sha-na. It got shortened to Shosh or Shoshie. I like it but i don't think it will be to everyone's taste.

logi · 15/07/2010 00:23

My sons partner is called shoshanna and my cousins daughter is called shoshoni nn shana and shoni...i like both names.

pixiestix · 15/07/2010 11:21

Thanks for the input. LOL at a drunk person saying Suzanna!

I really quite like it. I was reading that it is the original Hebrew root word for the Anglicized Susan - that is my mothers name, and although I love her to bits and would like to honour her I really don't want to call my child Susan!

mamsnet · 15/07/2010 11:24

I was just about to say the same.. Drunk saying Suzanna..

LaDiDaDi · 15/07/2010 11:27

I really, really like it, I also love Susannah.

shoshe · 15/07/2010 11:36
Grin
valiumSingleton · 15/07/2010 12:07

It sounds like somebody saying Susannah after a bottle of wine. I really wouldn't use it. I understand it has a history and is a proper name, but Susannah is a better choice imo

maktaitai · 15/07/2010 12:14

I think it's beautiful.

ShadeofViolet · 15/07/2010 12:19

Its too slurry - like a drunk person speaking.

MmeLindt · 15/07/2010 12:23

at sisters called Shoshanna and Savannah.

Would that not make you say Shavanna?

I don't like the name, too slurry and indistinct.

pixiestix · 15/07/2010 12:25

Hmmm, not too keen on Susannah but I don't know why. I have no reason to dislike it but it just doesn't have the "wow" factor for me.

OP posts:
HarderToKidnap · 15/07/2010 12:28

It's often prounounced with the stress on the third syllable (Shoshshe-naaar) which makes it a bit more pronounceable. I really like it.

SuzysZoo · 15/07/2010 21:13

How do you feel about the name Lily? Because I think Susan/Shoshanna derives from the Hebrew for Lily. So you could call your DD Lily after your mother.....
I think the world is ready for a few Susans now.... and other 40 something names like Deborah, Lisa and Nicola!!
However, on the Susan theme....
Susie
Suzie
Suzy
Suzi
Siouxi
Susanna
Suzanna
Suzanne
Susannah
Zanna
Zannah
Tiger-Lily (see above!)

BustleInYourHedgerow · 16/07/2010 00:05

Not even Shoshanna though, Shashanna! They still don't know what their mother was thinking. God I hope they're not on MN!
