Bald spots on my 3.5 year old girls head

Looking for some advice, my 3.5 year old girl the last week has two bald spots on her head all of a sudden, one on her crown last Sunday which we noticed the doctor gave us some fungal cream but yesterday we’ve noticed another on the side of her head, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or little one?

Could it be ring worm? would explain the sudden appearance of more patches.

Luna365 · 13/04/2025 17:46

It doesn’t look like ring worm from what I’ve looked up as that’s scaly and red patches 😭these patches I can see hair growth kind of like it’s snapping off but creating patches

My son had the exact same thing. I panicked but Dr said it was fungal, gave me a cream and it cleared up!

Luna365 · 14/04/2025 03:37

Did he end up with more patches at the beginning as I’ve noticed more hair snapping off on the other side? I’ve been applying the cream on the other two patches but haven’t really noticed any improvement

Can you post a pic? I know you said its not ring worm but from what you're describing and the fact its spreading it sounds like it.

Luna365 · 14/04/2025 20:16

These are the two patches that are clear at the moment, the 3rd is in her hairline so can’t really see at the moment just looks thin but these two are the main bald spots. Thank you for taking your time and replying - from one very stressed mum

My 2 year old has patches like this, and the gp thinks it’s alopecia areata. We have a dermatology appointment on 7th May. I’m pretty sure that’s what it is for my daughter. We’ve been so upset about it, but we are happy that we finally have the appointment so we can talk to someone about it. We have used steroid cream for a month and have some regrowth but not too much.

Littletreefrog · 14/04/2025 21:17

Could she be pulling it out? My DS has trichotillomania and has had bald patches like that since about 3.

rainbow616 · 19/04/2025 14:34

@Luna365how are you doing OP?

@Luna365how are you doing OP?

Sorry I’m new to this site just getting the hang of it.
our little one is due bloods now on Thursday doctors seem to think it could be a vitamin deficiency but I’m not convinced of this.
the hair looks like it’s snapping and has now got worse in the hair line.
i have read of alopecia areata- maybe it could be this as she started nursery in January and we’ve recently welcomed a new baby so that could be stress related but she’s honestly showing no signs of stress, I’m just at my wits end of what’s causing her hair to fall out me and dad are very stressed also she’s definitely not pulling it out, I’ve never witnessed her doing this

@Luna365its awful and so upsetting isn’t it 😩😢 we wondered if our little girls started after an awful bout of hand foot and mouth.

Luna365 · 19/04/2025 17:57

@rainbow616 well you mentioning that, this third patch has appeared after her having the norovirus which was stressful for her as she did end up pooing on our carpet and being sick in the car which she is still mentioning now nearly 2 weeks after! I feel as though you just can’t stop picking your brain of what could be happening to cause it to fall out 😭 my little one does also have a milk allergy and has been having food with milk in so I’m also wondering could that be the cause

@Luna365aw no bless her 😢 it does make you wonder

rainbow616 · 12/05/2025 21:10

@Luna365hi OP, how’s your daughter now? X

Luna365 · 12/05/2025 21:26

@rainbow616 Hi! She had her bloods done which wasn’t the best experience and they all came back fine, we’ve currently got another doctors appointment this week to ask to see a dermatologist, and I swear she has another patch coming as well, will add a photo of it😭
how is your little one? 🤞

We had our first appointment with a dermatologist last week who confirmed alopecia areata. He’s prescribed a hydrocortisone cream to use on the patches. Her hair is starting to grow back in now.

rainbow616 · 12/05/2025 21:28

have you noticed any hair growing back?

Luna365 · 12/05/2025 21:34

Oh wow! I’m so glad your little one’s hair is growing back and that’s so positive to hear,
did your little one have multiple patches?
how long did it take for you to get the dermatologist appointment? Sorry for asking so many questions!!
I haven’t noticed any hair growth as such, but the patches haven’t got any bigger and the patches aren’t fully smooth there is hair there just it looks like it’s been snapped? I’m hoping maybe that’s positive that the patches aren’t smooth and there is hair there just that it needs to grow 🤞 I did join a children’s alopecia page on fb and had a brief look but found it very overwhelming, I know people say ‘it’s just hair’ but how can you not be devastated at your little girl loosing it- I’m so sorry for the long message xx

Don’t apologise! It’s so overwhelming. She has 6 patches, two of them are small and unnoticeable to look at her. We were referred to a dermatologist at the end of Jan. I asked for the gp to expedite her about six weeks ago and got a cancellation appointment last week, so we were really lucky. They expedited her due to another two patches appearing. It’s so upsetting, but I think we have got to the place now where we have accepted it. I have been looking into gut health and how it’s linked to autoimmune diseases like alopecia. The dermatologist did link it to a bout of hand foot and mouth she had last year. I’m pretty sure she had Covid a couple of months after the hfm so her immune system really took a hit! I would say it took about 4 months to start seeing regrowth. In one of the patches the hair growth is so much, I think in another week or so, won’t be able to tell it was there at all so 🤞 it continues and no new patches appear! X

Luna365 · 12/05/2025 21:51

so quite a while of a wait then! We do have private health through my husbands work so I’m debating at the moment to go through them to hopefully be seen sooner than the nhs but have just booked a gp appointment so will see what they say🤞- it’s hard because you want answers right now don’t you! Especially when you start noticing more patches
I was actually reading into gut health earlier and have ordered her some probiotics to take, hoping that’ll make a difference, we’ve been giving her biotin vitamins and her hair has grown and become so curly, just not noticed in the patches 🙃
so positive to hear that your little one is doing well with the cream and one of the patches may be disappearing! Maybe there is some light at the tunnel for us 🤞 I have my fingers crossed for you that this continues xx

Thank you, I really hope everything goes well with your little one too. Vitamin d is also really beneficial for hair growth too, I’ve read. Let me know if you get to see your gp xx

insomniac1 · 28/08/2025 00:31

Hi @Luna365how is your daughter now?

Luna365 · 06/09/2025 20:54

@insomniac1 hi! The patches have grown back over the last month id say! The regrowth has been amazing, you can’t even tell there was hair missing except for the one she had on her crown- I’m not sure if the vitamins helped along with the cream that one of the ladies said she used on her LO on this thread and also being home for the 6 weeks holidays so less stress!

OP posts:
insomniac1 · 06/09/2025 21:09

Ah amazing! Which cream did you use? Also when they did bloods did they also check antibody bloods like ANA? Sorry we are going through something similar 😭

Luna365 · 07/09/2025 07:54

I asked the doctor for hydrocortisone cream, she also takes probiotics and biotin tablets
with the bloods I think she just had an overall whole blood check? But nothing came back in them which was frustrating, we’re still waiting to have a dermatologist appointment as well.
It’s so overwhelming!
