Coeliac disease in teenagers

Hi,

What are the typical symptoms of coeliac in teenagers? My daughter is not gaining weight despite taking oral nutritional supplements prescribed by hospital, long term iron deficiency anaemia and now keeps saying she feels sick which seems to be worse in the mornings. Just wondering if this could be coeliac.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I think it could be but really the only way to tell is to be tested for it.

Cutting out gluten isn't recommended as you need to have been eating it for several weeks before the test.

As an aside, is she on hospital prescribed iron tablets - the ones the hospital gave me were iron sulphate, and quite an high dose, gave me terrible stomach pains . I buy my own now as there are gentler forms out there. I also take them with food instead of an hour before, it’s a slower journey but better one.

Could be coeliac but if hospital are involved and prescribing I’d be surprised if not tested already. Worth asking though.

Ask them to do a blood test initially.

dd had sporadic sickness (id say she’d have a little vomit a few times a week), nausea, poor weight gain and anemic for years. I asked the gp to test her in the end as nobody had considered it and her blood test was positive. Confirmed by endoscopy.
