I was just wondering if anyone has a partner with Lupus and how it affected their partners mental health? My partner is suffering with it and I think he may be in a bit of depression and hiding it. Anyone?

Hi there - just didn't want to leave the thread blank.

I haven't got a partner with it but it's an awful disease. Depending on what the immune system is specifically targeting, it could certainly affect mood. Long term inflammation can contribute to depression, and the (absolutely necessary) steroid therapy for it can hit mood hard.

As well as that, just the adjustment to having lupus, reading about the condition and the fear associated with that could affect anyones mood.

Depression is a sliding scale and multifactorial so it could be any number of the above or something else contributing. Is treatment currently showing success? Are side effects proving bothersome? It's a lot for one person to have to think about and the constant reacting to your own symptoms and disease state is stressful.

Deepest sympathies. Nothing wrong with seeking (low dose) anti-depressants when reacting to big life changes like these? Perhaps accompany with him to a GP appointment and gently raise thet he seems down?
