Total Thyroidectomy

Hi

Ive just found out I'm going to have a total thyroidectomy and I just wondered what the recovery is like. Ive been told I will be in hospital for at least 2 days but I just wondered how much time people have had to take off work?
Also how did people feel after leaving hospital, the hospital Im having my operation at is about a two and a half hour journey from my home so im a bit worried about the long journey after the op.

I was 23 when I had my op. I was in 7days, I did find the staples uncomfortable.
I stayed with my parents when I got home as I had dd(8). I went back to work after 4weeks, manual heavy job.
Unfortunately my scar never healed properly I'm 42 now and you can still see it.
I've never had any problems since and have my bloods done yearly.

I had my thyroid and some lymph nodes removed in April as they were cancerous. I was in hospital for 2 nights but was told I could leave after 1, I opted to stay as I don’t think I could walk to the car.
I took things easy for 2 weeks as I was quite tired. I avoided heavy lifting and got shopping delivered. I still get twinges in my neck but I’m sure that was the surgeon searching for lymph nodes. 6 months later I am pretty much back to normal and up to running 10-15 miles per week. I was fortunate that I have only had had my thyroxine changed once.

I had mine 11.5 years ago. One night in hospital. Probably should’ve stayed slightly longer, but wanted to be home as I had two young children

I was in two nights due to calcium levels. Was up and about within 3/4 hours. Walking out to the car was all fine to go home. Was back running and cycling after 10 days and back to work. Scar was diminishing after 3 weeks and hardly visible after 6/7 weeks
