Interested in discussion here! I’m in Melb and have been pretty unimpressed with the liberals in Kew and their corflute fracas over the past week. (I’m not in Kooyong, also not in Melb currently, I have a postal vote to fill out)

Sorry for my lateness!

I'm in the seat of Monash in Vic, which is ridiculously large & been held by the Libs for decades. The now past member Russell Broadbent is a nutter who voted against his party on gay marriage & mandatory covid vaccination. Thus he lost endorsement from the Libs & stayed in parliament as an independent. And ran as an independent this year.

It should have been a real opportunity for change! I endorsed a local independent, Deb Leonard, backed by climate 200, one of the Teals. The seat is still listed as in doubt but she only managed 17% of the primary vote. With a half million dollar campaign behind her.

The Lib candidate Mary Aldred will almost certainly take the seat.

Sorry for babbling, I'm depressed about this

@Codlingmoths ah, you confused me when you said “out west”. I saw Wolohan on Insiders this morning. Very impressive. All four journos lamented his loss for the Liberal party.

I think it was a typo of our seat, sorry!

And yes, I think it’s an unfortunate truth that our own national defence capability is more important than it used to be, and a vet and decent guy in parliament was a good thing.

@Codlingmoths well, Andrew Hastie and Philip Thompson are still there so military is covered there.

I can't find out anything for Goldstein, which is my area. Postal votes still coming in and Liberal Tim Wilson might still get it. 🤮

Andrew Hastie is a bit too evangelical for me (I’m Catholic, and not at all anti religion), I tentatively don’t mind Philip Thompson. I’d prefer Wolahan as potential future party leader while Hastie seems to be in the running. Menzies has been ‘uncalled’ apparently with postals coming in LNP.

@Codlingmoths ooh. Catholic here, too. I’m fairly sure Hastie is a happy clapper type. I don’t see Hastie as PM material. And I think being Opposition leader coming from WA with a young family would be a ridiculous decision to make. If I was his wife, I’d be divorced asap. Defence spokesman would be great, though. All the Aukus stuff five minutes down the road.

If Ben Small hangs onto Forrest, he might get something as he is a longtime party apparatchik (I’m not a fan of the genre). Forrest used to be diehard Liberal. Now they are fighting for postal votes.

Trump said he doesn't know who Dutton is. Nice. He then went on to praise Albo which is a tad alarming.

But then Trump sees himself as the Pope, so it's hard to read anything into the tangerine toddler's views. It must be a nightmare dealing with him.

I'm in Groom (QLD) and didn't bother to look up our result. It's been a safe liberal seat for decades. Although there was a swing towards the independent, which looks promising. it might become worthwhile voting.

Longdarkteatimeofthesoul · 05/05/2025 03:52

Monique Ryan's seat is now live again after the counting of the postal votes - she may have been a tad too hasty claiming the seat.

Hurray for Ali France :) seems like she’s a remarkable woman.

She seems like a complete hero. Which is I’m sure how she will be greeted when she arrives in parliament!
if bandt loses, this election will go down in history for toppling two leaders.

I'd never heard of Ali France but jeez, you can't help but like her. With everything she's faced, question time will be a doddle for her. Well done to the voters in Dickson.

Longdarkteatimeofthesoul · 05/05/2025 04:39

I almost cried reading about Ali France - what a Woman!!!

Joe Exotic, of Tiger King fame, also endorsed Anthony Albanese. I don't know what it is, but he seems to be strangely popular with crazy Americans...
