Interested in discussion here! I’m in Melb and have been pretty unimpressed with the liberals in Kew and their corflute fracas over the past week. (I’m not in Kooyong, also not in Melb currently, I have a postal vote to fill out)

There is now. Voting in a safe Labor seat, so I don’t expect any surprises here.

The only surprising thing about the past couple of months is just how bad a job the Libs have done. It’s almost like Dutton doesn’t want to win. But then, he orchestrated Turnbull’s ousting, so it’s not like he’s without ambition for the job.

It’s quite curious how unprepared and terrible their campaign has been, given they’ve literally had the most amount of time possible to prepare for this.

Codlingmoths · 01/05/2025 18:28

I agree. My own current mp is a lib and seems a good guy and I do believe in electing decent libs to maintain a strong two party system. But duttons comments about climate change, and especially that line about women can job share if they don’t want to do 5 days in an office just have me thinking bleugh, cannot vote for that party.
Amelia Hamer initially seemed like a win for the L party but she’s not managed either any substance or political nous so I can’t be the only one thinking what a disappointment.

I might be in a swing seat for a change. Redistribution and an unwell current mp might force a change. At the shops where we have a booth, always 4, sometimes 6, Lib volunteers to Labor’s one though today they had 3.

I will be on the website refreshing regularly for my seat while watching Anthony Green do his thing for the last time. With wine.

TerrorAustralis · 02/05/2025 10:25

I'd never heard of Amelia Hamer, but an attack piece came up in my feed today. Seems that while talking about how tough it is being a renter, she neglected to mention she owns two properties and is a trust-fund baby. Do candidates like these not realise that people are going to dig up EVERYTHING on them?

Yep, she came out with a lot of potential in the cv and a relatively young female, just seems to have failed on political nous and authenticity, and if you don’t have either of those what do you bring exactly?

I found this article really thoughtful. He is right. We take comfort in the ease of our voting process. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05-01/first-time-voter-reflects-on-australian-federal-election-china/105224628. And, while I am voting today, I like the idea that 8.5m people have taken the opportunity to vote already. I like the idea that our democracy is just part of everyday life but still so important to us that we all make sure we participate in it.

I agree, they've been just useless. But then I remember they are still just the same bunch if useless idiots we had when ScoMo was PM so I don't komnow why I expected more. My main hope now is that my voting place hasn't run out of sausages by the time we get there after swimming.

That link didn’t work for me.

velvetandsatin · 03/05/2025 04:24

I voted early. I like to think of all the people out enjoying a democracy sausage today, though.

Spud has run a gruesomely bad campaign, thank god. It's not over till it's over, though, I guess.

TerrorAustralis · 03/05/2025 05:46

Our local democracy sausage stand was a shambles. Probably run by the Liberal campaign team!

DrJump · 03/05/2025 05:50

Labour has held my seat for a while but by a narrow margin(it's normally a bell weather).
We have only very very right wing candidates so I think that we may end up with a liberal because of preference flows.

WHAT?!?!
Bugger the question of who our PM will be.
Anthony Green retiring is the very sands shifting beneath my feet!!!!!!

YeahNahWhal · 03/05/2025 07:35

Safe Labour seat here also, not expecting much of a swing to the Greens either. Hopeful for an outcome tonight, it would not be fair if Antony can't call it on his last election!

TheSandgroper · 03/05/2025 09:30

No democracy sausage at my booth at 3pm. I don’t know about this morning.

Tradersinsnow · 03/05/2025 10:29

Ugh can we please just get on with the counting? Be nice if we could have a result in the next hour or so ;)

Tradersinsnow · 03/05/2025 10:31

Oooooh Ali France is doing well so far! I am going to laugh so hard if the Spud loses his seat.

TheSandgroper · 03/05/2025 10:38

We are still open for another 25 minutes, thank you!!!

TheSandgroper · 03/05/2025 10:41

@Tradersinsnow are you watching the ABC? It would be helpful if everyone here was.

Peter Dutton, IMO, is likely to win. Mr Lib said Dutton is always tight - 100 votes one year. Kim Beazley always had a tight result except, except for the year Brand thought they might be voting for the Prime Minister. He won very well, then. Voters like the idea of directly electing a prime minster.

Tradersinsnow · 03/05/2025 10:45

Yes I am watching the ABC and the guardian.

I forgot about you guys, sorry.

The difference between Brand and Dickson, though, is that Brand has always been held by Labor, despite some tight results. Dickson has gone back and forth between Liberal and Labor. And Dutton won it off Cheryl Kernot who was on the nose for a number of reasons by the time Spud challenged her for the seat.

TheSandgroper · 03/05/2025 11:15

Ooh, scathing remarks re Victorian Libs. “They keep finding new ways to lose”. Well, defaming one of your members will do that.

TheSandgroper · 03/05/2025 11:26

Antony Green says Labor has won, either majority or minority.

pinkfloralcurtains · 03/05/2025 11:38

Wow. Seeya Dutton🤞
