What are we doing this Melbourne Cup weekend?

I know the public holiday is on Tuesday but most of Melbourne seems to take the Monday off (and often the Friday before) to make it a very looooong weekend.

I'm relishing the quieter roads and beaches.

My 8 y/o has a "School Free Day" on Monday! Handy, since we've an appointment for him at the Royal Dental Hospital.

Bet the teachers are thrilled to have 2 days off 😁

When I taught In Melbourne, the Victorian government cottoned on to this and forbade pupil-free days or CPD in government schools on the Monday. I always booked long service leave on that day.

The teachers would all turn up and run a book on who could guess most closely how many pupils would come in. Very very low numbers and they all went home at lunchtime. Or recess.
