The mushroom poisoning in Vic.... I am gripped - Part 2

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/08/2023 00:38

Hi everyone, Aussie Mumsnetter here. As some have requested a new thread be started by an Aussie I decided to do it.

I am still gripped by this case and like many, I am awaiting updates of new information.

Will a matching donor for a liver for Ian be found soon? I hope he makes a full recovery.

Will he be able to shed new light on the lunch they all shared?

And of course is she guilty of deliberately poisoning them or was it an innocent mistake?

That beef looks as dry as fuck. That isn't a fillet.

But I have had two since this story broke, and one of them I made and served to my family. They were aware of my interest in this case but I can report all still alive.

hatillathebun · 17/11/2023 01:28

You know how some people just "look crazy".... The media really know how to pick the perfect photo.

echt · 17/11/2023 02:07

It's so true, @hatillathebun. The Guardian used to do this all the time with Michael Gove, mind you he does have one of those faces. They wheeled a different one out every time, every one a loon. I doubt very much whether he minded.

Are they illegal here? Just had a quick look, and it seems cultivating and buying/selling them IS illegal, but nothing said about picking and eating them. Bit hard to police I guess.

@oakleaffy We held our nausea to us like a precious object for hours and hours made me crack up, god you've brought back some memories!

I was flat on my back literally unable to move for a few hours, staring at the sky, then had a rush of energy & decided to walk to the servo. My friends found me sitting in front of the drinks fridge, eating a sausage roll & babbling about the 1000's of colours in the fridge & how they all had different feelings. The servo attendant said he didn't mind b/c I wasn't annoying anyone.

Then the nausea/vomiting. As you say, grim grim grim. I was already hallucinating about colours, so I was spewing rainbows. Not in the servo thankfully.

Bloody hell, the things we did to ourselves!

Oh goodness....'Technicolour yawn'...That must have been horrible.
The nausea was so intense the last time {last century} I took magic mushrooms.

The colours and visuals are intense, that's for sure.

There is a video showing British soldiers who were dosed with LSD as part of 'research'.

One reported ''I am wiped out as a fighting force''
They simply lay around giggling, and couldn't do their appointed tasks.

''Everything he looks at appears to be pattered'' says the narrator.

Looks like they received a hefty dose.

@Dustyblue that sounds not unlike one of my adventures!! Ahh youth, so fleeting.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 15/04/2025 11:14

Any inkling on how long the trial is expected to last?

Wrenjeni · 15/04/2025 11:21

That daily mail article doesn’t mention the charge of attempted murder of her ex husband? I’m sure he was included in the attempted murder charges last time?

3luckystars · 15/04/2025 16:49

Thanks for the update !

Dustyblue · 16/04/2025 01:20

I heard the trial is expected to last minimum 6 weeks. I guess there's a lot of evidence to trot through given how many time she allegedly tried to off her ex.

I was called for jury duty at Morwell during the period her trial is set to start! Damn, I was tempted. Problem is Morwell is over an hours drive away, and I wouldn't be surprised if they sequester the jury given the high profile of the case. I cant be away for that long. Also I'm convinced she did it and couldn't honestly claim to be impartial! So I've been exempted.

Problem is, I've yet to meet a local who IS impartial. They'll have a hard time finding a jury. Maybe that's why she wanted it held locally?

Dustyblue · 16/04/2025 01:33

Forgot to say, obviously I could've been put on some other boring trial and then I would've felt ripped off😂

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/04/2025 05:36

Thanks for the update. It’s taken a while for this to get to court!

Gosh! That is interesting. The trial would make a cracking series of The Twelve.

Good point about the difficulty of finding anyone impartial in the area. I was thinking she maybe wanted to be near her children, but have heard she has a top barrister, so maybe it was care of legal advice, with what you said in mind.

Dustyblue · 16/04/2025 07:58

She does have a good barrister. She has money & can afford the best. I still remember seeing her at the supermarket before she was charged, bold as brass with expensive items in her trolley. No, not mushrooms! But really, in her position I'd be doing my shopping online.

My uncle is another 'good barrister' & I called him when I was wavering about jury duty. He said he prefers city juries than rural because rural are more conservative. Apparently the Defence or Judge can rule out any potential jury member for any link with the court at the time. So, even a solicitor who did conveyancing on your house years ago, if you recognise another member of the jury pool, if you're related to anyone in the room, have had any contact be it online or in person... all grounds for dismissal.

If that's the case.. what a waste of time! It will be interesting to see what actually happens!

velvetandsatin · 16/04/2025 08:05

At this rate, they'll have to bus in jurors from WA. She's that notorious.

squishee · 16/04/2025 08:10

It's been (inter)national headline news, so I don't think location makes any difference.

It obviously does, as she's chosen to be tried locally as opposed to the city - knowing most of the locals will have ties to the victims. It's very odd. Mind you, she is very odd.

squishee · 16/04/2025 08:21

I'm slightly bemused that EP's prison hair looks way better than mine does as a free woman.

If her case was heard in Melbourne, there would be much less chance of potential jury members knowing her OR the victims, the families, the friends, the people who used to read her community newsletter, or the veg delivery service I won't name. No need for decent people providing a great service to be caught up in this.

echt · 16/04/2025 13:09

My take away from all this is that food dehydrators, an annual feature in Aldi, have never been back since the beef Wellington incident.

Just saying.

Yes, we're discussing it on a UK site! (Though I appreciate most posters on this topic are probably Australian.)

She does look like she’s had a bit of a glow up in prison. And lost weight, maybe no beef and mushroom wellington available inside!! 😁

velvetandsatin · 23/04/2025 09:15

The trial is due to start next Monday, 28th April.
