The mushroom poisoning in Vic.... I am gripped - Part 2

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/08/2023 00:38

Hi everyone, Aussie Mumsnetter here. As some have requested a new thread be started by an Aussie I decided to do it.

I am still gripped by this case and like many, I am awaiting updates of new information.

Will a matching donor for a liver for Ian be found soon? I hope he makes a full recovery.

Will he be able to shed new light on the lunch they all shared?

And of course is she guilty of deliberately poisoning them or was it an innocent mistake?

I’m feeling sorry for the ex. She tried to kill him 3 times (Allegedly)? What does that do to your sense of self? Poor sod, bet he never lets anyone cook for him now.

velvetandsatin · 03/11/2023 00:02

Those of us who were saying she looks guilty as hell were slapped down- but she looked so fishy from the get go-

Yes, and all the bleating about the similarity with Lindy Chamberlain - who was convicted in 1982 on the basis of bad forensic evidence (and a UK "dingo expert"! As Lindy said then, "I didn't know they had dingo experts in the UK.").

This case hinges on forensic evidence which has come a long way since then.

Even the news reports on tv last night were mentioning how in that shonky doorstop interview she was wiping her eyes and then looking at fingers, but there were no actual tears there.

I'm confused about the mushrooms she was using to kill her husband. The thing is, with the most deadly mushrooms, your Death Vaps, Destroying Angels etc, its death, regardless of whether you have one bite or the whole thing. On the rare occasion you survive, its dialysis for life, so what was she giving him that she was trying to kill him but was unsuccessful? Unless she tried something else with him and it didn't work so she went with something more toxic?

Sorry, Ive just realised how morbid that sounds! I have an interest in mycology so that's my angle!

velvetandsatin · 03/11/2023 00:17

She didn't try to death cap poison him on the other occasions, but some agent was used that hospitalised him for weeks on one of them. The special death cap meal, which he pulled out of "at the last minute", was prepared for him and his extended family who were also attending the meal.

One of the news reports (sorry I can't link, can barely keep up!) mentioned nightshades. Very curious?

Surely they can't charge her with attempting to kill her ex because he was invited even though he didn't attend?

I think you can. If she says she prepped the dish at 9am ready for a 1pm lunch and he didn't pull out till noon then she prepped deadly food for him and intended he would eat it alongside his relatives.

That means three previous attempts on her ex's life. She's crazy to think she could just keep trying and no one would think it wasn't suspicious. It could be the police already had suspicions she was deliberately doing this before this lunch and he pulled out as he was too scared to come and eat her food.

Of course you can't.
She may have had intent and preparation but she was not able to carry out an actual attempt on him - because he wasn't there. Intent is not attempt.

And yet she has been charged on five counts of attempted murder - and one of those counts is her intention for Simon to eat that death cap meal that day.

Nissy123 · 03/11/2023 06:41

I wonder what items they seized from her home and what stuff they need to analyse on her computer. I don't believe she's some mastermind and I reckon because the police played the long game she probably searched stuff on her commputer

mokjkjjo · 03/11/2023 08:02

The BBC is reporting that she is charged with attempting to murder her ex four times: 3 times between Nov 21 and Sept 22: and also at the meal which he did not attend. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-67305278

Yeah the only reason the man didn’t have another actual attempt on his life effectively is because he didn’t turn up. She invited him and wanted him there, so she could try to kill him again. That’s the charge. She was trying to get him there so she could kill him, that’s attempted murder, the fact she failed doesn’t change it. It’s a bit far fetched to say if he’d turned up she’d have made sure he didn’t eat the pie and was only considering it. The trying to get him there so she could kill him is the attempt. And clearly if she’s guilty of what she’s charged with the intent was there, particularly if she’s tried to do him in 3 times before.

this womanstands accused of being a mass murderer. killing or attempting to kill his whole family. She was trying to murder 5 people. 3 have died. It’s utterly mind boggling how she thought anyone would believe it was accidental and she bought the mushrooms from an Asian grocer.

I’m actually angry that she targeted an “Asian grocer” who sold her these mushrooms. Is she also racist?

To be honest I think that was more she was thinking an Asian grocery store was more believably the place you could buy not widely available dehydrated mushrooms rather than the supermarket. She may even have bought dehydrated mushrooms in one before.

i don’t think that was about racism. More she’s an idiot who was trying to think of some place she could believably say she may have bought them.

She maybe racist, who knows, but suspect that was more about proclaiming her innocence.

KatherineJaneway · 03/11/2023 13:01

3rd May is a long time away and she didn't apply for bail, presumably as it would not have been granted or maybe she could not pay.

Apparently, when charged with murder, you can only apply for bail in the Supreme Court, not at a local court in Victoria.

alwaysonadiet1 · 03/11/2023 13:50

Most of the death cap poisoning incidents are in Asian people as the mushrooms resemble a type commonly used in Asian cuisine. Straw caps I think. She probably knew this.

Dustyblue · 04/11/2023 02:13

I wondered that too. I guess it's possible, but I was on EB for a loooong time, and don't remember this/her at all 🤔

If you click the link in the Daily Mail article, it seems to suggest a true crime forum- possibly Websleuths.

Sorry, what does EB mean?

Dustyblue · 04/11/2023 01:42

It seems her former colleagues from 20 years ago are saying she's definitely not stupid. She used to be an air traffic controller! That takes some mental acuity surely.

Is Websleuths closed down? EB was a large Australian forum that suddenly closed a couple of years ago, Essential Baby.

hatillathebun · 04/11/2023 02:44

@LovelaceBiggWither Ohhhh 😳 I should have known that I used to be on their Facebook page years ago.

Ah I see... had never heard of Websleuths. Interesting!
