Jeez. How about as so many of us came from the UK and were receiving support from this forum since long before we moved,as well as that UK and Aus share more ties than many other countries that it seemed logical.

CheckingOutandIn · 26/04/2023 10:01

The U.K shares ties with many countries due to the colonialism that was forced upon them by the British Empire, Australia is not unique in that, and I don't see it as something positive so personally I did find it odd to expect a little corner of Australia on a U.K and Irish forum. I wouldn't go to a Canadian forum and expect to be able discuss U.K life in a dedicated section. I'd go to a British forum for that, But it made more sense when some kindly took the time to explain that most of the good Australian forums have closed. Anyway, enjoy your forum.

SargentSagittarius · 26/04/2023 10:21

Find it odd as much as you like, @CheckingOutandIn

Not sure what we’re supposed to do with that info?

Anyway…

Moving on…

blueled · 26/04/2023 10:23

There are actually objections to this section? What? Why? I guess I should RTFT first.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 26/04/2023 10:23

If nothing else it's nice to have people to talk to during "our" day!!! I run out do threads of a morning with no one else on them.... lol.

Surely any other nationalities could ask for their own board? I actually agree with the first comments - so many Brits are very disparaging on any thread about another country and your comments only reinforce that view. It will be lovely to be able to chat with like minded people who are not going to criticise everything about our homelands.

CheckingOutandIn · 26/04/2023 10:54

Not sure what we’re supposed to do with that info?

Nothing. I was just explaining why some of us may have objected a little. We didn't realise just how special Aussies are compared to all the other nationalities but now we know.

It works both ways. I've seen plenty of comments from Aussies and sometimes Kiwis, British expats and immigrants are sometimes the worst for this though, shitting all over the U.K, and I'll be the first to complain about the problems here, but now many of those same people demand their own dedicated little corner of a British and Irish website because apparently Aussie forums, and there are still some around, I checked, aren't good enough. The time difference aspect does make it more understandable though. It must feel a bit lonely on here when most people on here are ending their day, just as you're beginning yours.

Anyway. This is a forum for Aussies, not for grumpy Brits, so I'll leave you to it again. Enjoy.

Hi All! So noice to have our own space. Any Kiwis living in Oz affected by the new citizenship announcements? I'm in two minds, mostly because I do not want another bloody passport (Aussie, required for citizens, would make 3)

We will be. I've been sitting on the paperwork for the returning resident visa because DH and I both came over as kids so that would t have given us PR but not the kids. Now I'll just wait for July 1 and put us all through for citizenship!

Give it a rest love.

If you don't want to see people from a board talking then hide the board.

Hi everyone, it's me from the shaky Hawkes Bay, NZ today. Good to have a board for us, thanks 🙂
Ps - several strong earthquakes here this morning, & maybe 40 ish aftershocks.

I’m originally from the Bay. Still have family there.

dragonbreaths · 26/04/2023 13:56

Kia Ora, guys. Kiwi living in Wales. I love it here. Wales is really beautiful and the people are friendly ... its very similar to NZ in lots of ways.
I do miss Kiwi/ Aussie humour, feijoas and buzz bars though.

@CheckingOutandIn I'm not sure whether you are genuine or just trying to get a rise out of people. But assuming you are genuine, there is really no significant difference between a board for 'mumsnetters who are in Aus and NZ' to talk about matters of common interest, and a board for mumsnetters who like arts and crafts, or a board for mumsnetters who are planning holidays, or for mumsnetters who are in Scotland.

Anyone can start a thread in general chat about a topic that could also be in one of the specific boards, but a specific board just means people with those common interest can more easily browse for threads that might interest them. You are welcome to peruse and join in on any of the threads, or ignore any threads you aren't interested in. I really don't think making a new board is about excluding anyone, but just about making it easy for mumsnetters to find threads that are interesting and relevant for them.

(And fwiw I imagine Mumsnet HQ would prefer to encourage more people to use the site, rather than less, irrespective of where we are located)

blueled · 26/04/2023 14:59

Pesky Australians, we are. But if we didn't have our own little island here who knows what might happen?
Next thing you know we're everywhere.
In the lift, in the lorry, and all over the Malonga gilderchuck.

SargentSagittarius · 26/04/2023 19:50

Gosh, you just can’t stay away, can you @CheckingOutandIn?

Look at you madly refreshing the thread and continuing to post. You love it here!

You’ve said your piece. Now, in the words of you Brits, off you pop.

Brit here apologising in advance for planing to lurk on your new board - I love reading about the daily lives of people overseas; one of the best things about Mumsnet is its international membership. Hoping you enjoy your new board and wishing you all the best Cake

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 26/04/2023 20:36

Good Lord @CheckingOutandIn - have you even visited Australia? Do you have any Australian friends?

Most of us Aussies are on MN because of our connections to the UK, either we were born there, we lived there, travelled there, have connections there, and love the place. Doesn't stop us hating what's been done to it. I think it's criminal that one of the reasons I returned to Oz is that I knew I couldn't survive on the income I could earn there combined with childcare and living costs. I had the ability to make a different lifestyle choice but most of my lovely friends in the UK don't.

You don't need to repeat yourself we heard you loud enough in "site stuff"

Congrats Aussies and Kiwis, I hope you all enjoy your lovely new board. 🥳

Kia ora whanau!

Thanks Mumsnet. It's awesome to have a place we can discuss things from a kiwi/aus perspective.
