Can a baby have face paint for 20 mins?

Hi, we have a photoshoot booked for the middle of October, baby boy is due at the end of September. I was hoping to get a couple of halloween themed pictures, (my daughters bday is in late October and its our favourite holiday), I was thinking of going with the classic addams family outfits, with the baby being pubert addams. However I can't think of how to do puberts moustache, Google suggested face paint/eyeliner, but I'm not sure about it due to him being so young and his skin so sensitive. Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing? baby safe moustache ideas? or should I just scrap the idea and think of something else?

That’s a bit of a ridiculous idea!

So a new born? I wouldn't. The skin is so sensitive. And face paint right at the nose would smell.

Do it next year if you must.

We painted a moustache on DD1 when she was a baby, but I think she was a bit older. She was fine.

I think you'll regret such silly costumes when you look back at your young family and want to see their beautiful faces. Dress up and take a pic at home if you must, but don't waste your money paying for a proper photoshoot on novelty fancy dress that you'll be embarrassed to put on the wall.

Photoshop it. A moustache like that wouldn’t be hard to edit into the photo later.

SquishyGloopyBum · 05/08/2025 22:34

Why would you make your baby look like a mini hitler?

PInkyStarfish · 05/08/2025 22:35

Just knit or crochet a little pumpkin hat and a sleep sack or buy an orange babygro. If you can’t crochet or knit, I bet one of the grandmothers will make it for you.

That sounds so cool! We used to love doing these things when our kids were little. Editing apps are so amazing now, so I wonder if you can draw the moustache on later.

I did this years ago with my then 1 month old with eye liner for a Halloween party. Do not put it over the actual eyebrows. It was hard to get it off in the eyebrow hair. Obviously I couldn’t rub hard so she had darker eyebrows for a day. Moustache was fine. Wiped straight off.

Just, why?

I imagine a bit of eyeliner would be ok for 10 minutes. Maybe do a little test patch though. Can you get a kids one? Or photoshop in. I imagine if the rest of the costumes are good you could get away with not doing the moustache too

NuffSaidSam · 05/08/2025 23:05

When you've been on Mumsnet as long as I have you think you've seen every single question that could possibly be asked about parenting.

But never seen this one before! Kudos OP.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer having never painted a moustache onto a newborn. I think probably fine for a few minutes, but better to just Photoshop in and not risk it.

K98 · 05/08/2025 23:08

We'll be getting normal family photos, but they mentioned we could do 1 outfit change hence the idea of a Halloween themed photo as an extra.

We are having regular family photos taken, the halloween themed ones are due to the fact we were offered an outfit change and personally I don't find halloween costumes silly and would proudly display them, halloween is a big deal in my house.

We have non toxic kids face paint but dont think you can get any that is ok for newborns, think we will just go without and add them with photoshop if necessary x

I am a face painter. I use the most expensive/hypoallergenic/cosmetic grade face paint you can buy - and I'm not insured for anyone under three.

Having said that, I think it would be completely fine for a short while. A new paint or eye pencil applied directly or with a clean brush is really unlikely to do anything.

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 06/08/2025 22:24

I love this

FreddysFingers · 06/08/2025 22:27

Food colouring?

But not for a young baby, more 12 months and up?
