Lingerie....Solsiss lace

ToomanyChristmasPresents · 09/12/2014 10:53

I am sitting here patching Soltiss lace by hand to apply to a silk neglige. It's a Xmas present for my MIL. Basically, money is tight, and I have the silk and lace in my stash left over from other projects. I think this one will be really nice, and we will feel proud to give it.

While I do the hand work I am watching a rerun of a Kirsty Allsop Christmas craft special. It's fun, but bless her...tied dyed pants and pom-poms etc. all the supplies for that stuff aren't cheap and you just end up with tat in the end. What I am doing is no more difficult, and I feel I'll have a marvellous gift in the end easily worth £300. Nothing "Becky's Home Ecky," about it. I wish there was a market for showing us %~#Awesome!#%^* on telly instead of just kitch.

I think Kirsty is quite good actually. I like lots of what she makes.

Each to their own.

I like her too. I suspect the shows are out together by a whole team who decide what we can handle. Just wondered if I was the only one itching for something a little more ambitious.

How much would your supplies have cost you? Very few people have silk negligees and lace hanging about :o

SoupDragon · 09/12/2014 11:16

itching for something a little more ambitious.

The problem is that TV programmes have to have something for everyone. To put ambitious stuff in would rule out/put off large swathes of potential viewers. I think, rightly, that if you need ambitions stuff you need to seek specialist craft lessons. The TV programmes really are only there to whet an appetite.

Yes, I understand TV is a broad audience. I thought I might find kindred spirits in a chat craft room space. I live in London and can pick up bits on Goldhawk Road. My supplies will have cost about £20, including the silk Guterman thread.

Ah. Well I live in Cheshire where I can get mixed fibre "novelty print" fabric and pom poms. So she suits me.

Nope. What you'll find is a group of people with differing opinions about a common subject :o

As an aside, this is the "arts and crafts pictures" topic rather than just Arts & Crafts. The thread will pop up in active conversations but people might not check the topic specifically.

TimelyNameChangey · 09/12/2014 11:55

Soup good point. I don't even know why MN has this area. We can share pics on the actual Arts and Craft area anyway!

SoupDragon · 09/12/2014 12:04

Ah, site-wide pictures is a newfangled invention. It used to only be specific "picture" topics. TBH, this topic could go or be locked now.

MyGhostIsFlummoxed · 09/12/2014 12:09

I'd feel ick giving a silk negligee to my MIL but maybe that's just me.

TimelyNameChangey · 09/12/2014 12:20

soup yes....lets tell MNHQ to shut the bugger down and have a new topic instead!

ToomanyChristmasPresents · 09/12/2014 12:28

If it makes you feel better it is a silk "nightgown" trimmed in lace from a Vogue pattern. Not exactly "Ann Summers" more "Carine Gilson." She is a near perfect MIL and definitely deserves a luxurious treat. Frankly, I've got more time than money so there you go.

MyGhostIsFlummoxed · 09/12/2014 12:33

It wasn't a criticism OP, it's just my MIL is more a quilted dressing gown type of person...I just can't imagine (& would rather not Grin) her in a silk negligee.

Plus, she's a bit of a cow at times so I'm jealous of your perfect MIL.

SoupDragon · 09/12/2014 14:14

I have indeed suggested they zap the picture topics :)

Gone actually doing the sewing. Silk charmuese cut on the bias is a b*tch to sew. I always forget what a pia it is. Much prefer hand piecing the lace. Nearly done fingers crossed that it fits. I will never know. I don't expect to ever see her in it! It would be pretty dreadful if it is too small.
