Potentially controversial comment about Card-Making.....

OK, I appreciate that I may get shot down in flames for this, but honestly, this is a GENUINE question about card-making, based on something I've observed since the whole 'home made card' thing took off a few years back -

What is the real satisfaction in making cards from those 'ready cut'/ ready stick 'embellishments' that everywhere seems to sell these days??

Now, I TOTALLY get the whole 'home-made card' thing, but only in the sense of a truly 'one-off' self-designed piece of artwork, where someone ahs used their artistic skills/ paint/ self cut shapes, whatever to create something truly unique.

But what I see these days is just crass 'ready cut' combinations of the same bits and pieces thrown together in mostly similar ways?

That's not a 'handmade card' in the artistic sense surely?

And those peel off/ stick on italic phrases like 'Happy Birthday'/ Good Luck' etc --- Yeurch!

AS I said, I really don't mean to upset people, but I just don't really see the point. I mean it's not 'art' is it? Or is it?

It is cathartic for my Coddy! Maybe if I was having sex more on a regular basis, I would not have to resort to crafts for satisfaction, but that is another entire thread!

Only on MN could anyone think it was worth trying to start fisticuffs over a few bits of card and some sticky-backed plastic

sunchowder -- do you have a scanner?

Gameboy · 12/08/2005 18:10

Hey - I haven't disappeared just had to go to work today that's all

Glad this things kicked off! But I have to say it's not as heated as I thought it might be...

Maybe I just haven't had very good experiences/ haven't seen very many good homemade cards... where I work there is a little company shop downstairs and they obviously have a 'deal' with someone who makes cards (very badly I might add!)
As a result whenever there's a birthday or leaving do the person gets one of these naff cards which all seem to have stick on bottles of champagne / shoes/ ties (ties? FFS!)

I have to fess I haven't seen any of the MN cards, so I'm sure there are SOME nice ones out there - I just haven't seen them... and I have to agree with COD, if it's one piece of blue, one piece of white and a blue baby bootie with a stick on 'Congratulations' - that's not card-making - that's glueing!

I do have a scanner Champs, but the PC it is connected to is down and I don't have the software loaded on my work PC. I have never used the scanner, I inherited it when my Dad passed away....

WigWamBam · 12/08/2005 18:13

Here is the link for the MNers cards, just in case you missed them. Username mumsnetter, password netters.

You won't find too many naff cards with stuck-on bottles of champagne there ...

Enid · 12/08/2005 18:20

lol

have just remembered that dd1 bought one from her school bazaar

it is a plain white card with a stuck on stripy shirt

I still have it in my card drawer just waiting for the right occasion

WTF???

I know, cod ... my MIL makes half of them and very naff they are indeed. They give the rest of us indigestion but it makes her happy to do it, gives her a sense of self-satisfaction and keeps her off my back, which has to be a good thing.

Gameboy did you take a look at the cards made by the mumsnet cardmakers?

Gameboy · 12/08/2005 19:14

Hmm.. at least 3 stick on ties too......

But if I'm honest these ARE better than the ones they sell at work....

OP posts:
jayzmummy · 12/08/2005 19:16

Where?
Show me the stick on ties because I cant find them

MistressMary · 12/08/2005 19:19

Ha totally agree gameboy.
Mix and match come to mind.
I bought some once from someone once who thought hers were the bees knees in design - they were ok, I suppose. To be honest though, I could have done just a good a job if I had contacted her suppliers.
Nothing original.
