Potentially controversial comment about Card-Making.....

OK, I appreciate that I may get shot down in flames for this, but honestly, this is a GENUINE question about card-making, based on something I've observed since the whole 'home made card' thing took off a few years back -

What is the real satisfaction in making cards from those 'ready cut'/ ready stick 'embellishments' that everywhere seems to sell these days??

Now, I TOTALLY get the whole 'home-made card' thing, but only in the sense of a truly 'one-off' self-designed piece of artwork, where someone ahs used their artistic skills/ paint/ self cut shapes, whatever to create something truly unique.

But what I see these days is just crass 'ready cut' combinations of the same bits and pieces thrown together in mostly similar ways?

That's not a 'handmade card' in the artistic sense surely?

And those peel off/ stick on italic phrases like 'Happy Birthday'/ Good Luck' etc --- Yeurch!

AS I said, I really don't mean to upset people, but I just don't really see the point. I mean it's not 'art' is it? Or is it?

I bought a handmade card from Jayzmummy for my dd's 4th birthday and it's just the most gorgeous card I have ever seen. It's not American, it's not cutesy (well, no more than you'd expect for a 4 year old girl), it cost me less than a shop-bought one would have done, and I would defy anyone to find a nicer store-bought card.

And it was most definitely stuck onto a card and not a cat.

OH no Enid - I have to assess quality of card, and wrapping paper to ensure adequite thought has gone into the whole thing!

That would mean getting the cat to stand still for more than twenty seconds though, QoQ. That doesn't happen in this house very often.

my fave card ever was an e-card from Blue mountain when they first came out, a pair of spanial puppies that loaded really slowly with monotone pc version of 'Congratulations'

it was f**in hilarious especially when accompanied by sweary message

WigWamBam · 12/08/2005 16:33

My cat's just tried to eat dd's tea ... while it's still cooking in the saucepan. She may very soon have some embellishments on her.

Enid · 12/08/2005 16:34

if we count burrs as embellishments my cat is very fancy indeed

jayzmummy · 12/08/2005 16:34

Thanks WWB.

Nice to know my cards are appreciated by some

Little expensive embellishments have their place in this world the people that make them have a right to make a living and there is call for them. What I'm saying is we all help each other out in this world. The paper I can't make and as someone said below they do cross stitch and so do I and I can't make the cotton either. So really everything you use is made by someone else and then we provide you with the cards you see.The pens and paint is made by someone else so why shouldn't embellishments be too. There's nothing wrong with using them at all.I make my own embellishments and buy them too and you wouldn't be able to tell I bet.So nah.I see the person has started this thread to be controversial and then disappeared off hmm.

CAN we lay off the Americans PLEASE?
