Potentially controversial comment about Card-Making.....

OK, I appreciate that I may get shot down in flames for this, but honestly, this is a GENUINE question about card-making, based on something I've observed since the whole 'home made card' thing took off a few years back -

What is the real satisfaction in making cards from those 'ready cut'/ ready stick 'embellishments' that everywhere seems to sell these days??

Now, I TOTALLY get the whole 'home-made card' thing, but only in the sense of a truly 'one-off' self-designed piece of artwork, where someone ahs used their artistic skills/ paint/ self cut shapes, whatever to create something truly unique.

But what I see these days is just crass 'ready cut' combinations of the same bits and pieces thrown together in mostly similar ways?

That's not a 'handmade card' in the artistic sense surely?

And those peel off/ stick on italic phrases like 'Happy Birthday'/ Good Luck' etc --- Yeurch!

AS I said, I really don't mean to upset people, but I just don't really see the point. I mean it's not 'art' is it? Or is it?

Oh come on, I'm trying my very best to make this controversial.

bettys · 11/08/2005 23:53

They all look the same to me.....home-made cards that is. I have a selection of cards on the mantlepiece at the moment & the one that stands out most (apart from ds's brilliant artwork) is a reproduction of an original painting.

Me too. And Phoenix cards are really nice too and work out about 70p each.

Though home made cards are lovely. And cards with ready make stick ons are too.

In fact any card is better than no card.

Well apart from those dead cheap Christmas cards with naff pictures of horse drawn coaches on that are so flimsy they won't stand up on your mantelpiece.

I love M&S cards as well.

melissasmummy · 12/08/2005 13:27

I started making cards after I got 3 of the same "a new baby girl" card when I had my DD. I also struggled to find different & unique cards in shops.

You will find that alot of card makiers have their own imagination, so usually 2 cards are never the same, even if you use the same embellishments.

Alot of my relations & friends say how much it means to them that I have put time & effort into making them a unique card.

After all, anyone can go into a shop & but a card, can't they?

slightlymiffedmoorhen · 12/08/2005 13:56

Card making? by parents? Isnt that what we have got children for? Why make it yourself when you can get the kids to do it and you have a prefect excuse if it looks crap too. Crack the whip and get the little minxes toiling.

melissasmummy · 12/08/2005 14:04

The consept that I actually enjoy cardmaking a bit strange to you? I didn't have children so tey could do stuff for me!

My dd does make cards with me, we enjoy the fun we have making them & our friends & family enjoy receiving them.

bossykate · 12/08/2005 14:07

teehee, i just had to look at this thread - surely it is bound to kick off...

expatinscotland · 12/08/2005 14:10

I use stick on's with other homemade decorations. Mainly b/c I'm not the most creative or artistic person. But I use cards to communicate with my family abroad, so I prefer them to store bought b/c I can personalise them. I like to put digital photos of the family in them, or photos of our city, etc. And if it's Xmas I type each person a letter -NOT a 'newsletter' I hate those - to spare them my bad handwriting and cut it to fit the card, booklet-style, on seasonal paper.

Much better than just 'Merry Christmas' Signed, Can't be bothered to put much thought into you at the holidays.

katierocket · 12/08/2005 14:30

first time I've ever clicked on an 'arts & crafts' thread and it was purely due to the title. Was desperate to know what could possibly be controversial....

marthamoo · 12/08/2005 14:50

I tried very hard last night to make it controversial but I think it's a non-starter.

WigWamBam · 12/08/2005 14:53

This thread needs stirring up a bit

I can't see that it matters much whether it's "art" or whether it's totally unique. I also can't see that it matters whether you think it gives satisfaction to make it or not, or whether you think it's "crass". The fact remains that some people like making cards, and if they're not artistic enough to paint a masterpiece then why shouldn't they use pre-made embellishments? I do cross-stitch but I can't make the cotton myself, and I can't design charts to save my life so I buy cottons and charts to use - isn't that the same kind of thing? But I know that I find cross-stitching very satisfying.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. And if you'd rather receive a mass-produced bit of tat that does nothing other than line the pockets of Clintons Cards then that's OK, no-one need waste any time on making a card for you.

champs · 12/08/2005 14:55
