Removing dye splash

I recently posted in Stle & Beauty that I was planning to dye a pair of boots I bought. I did this and it worked out well, however, even though I masked the brown wooden heels, I still managed to get a couple of smears of the black dye on them.

My OH said I should have cleaned them immediately with WD40 whilst the dye was still wet, but I didn't know that at the time. Is there anything I can use to remove the smears, without damaging the finish of the heels, which look to be lacquered in some way?

Thanks
