Recovering a footstool

I have a rather shabby footstool (pouffe?)! that I would like to recover. I have limited skill or experience in this type of thing and don't own a sewing machine. Is it possible to do it in a kind of changing rooms way with a staple gun?

Usually yes

What shape is it?

It's square with a solid base and then has big square cushion on top so it looks as though it might lift up but it doesn't! Does that make sense?

Yes

Do you want to do it all as one piece (easiest) or do you want a fold/join where the cushion is?

Sorry I took so long to get back to you

Only just logged on so no worries!
Easiest way is best I think

So if you start with a square of material

You place it square to the footstool - it should be big enough that the corners it is long enough to fit down the corner seam and just fold underneath.

I would tack each of the four corners in place (temporarily)

then you have at each corner a nice taut edge with great folds of material either side

I would then (temporarily) tack the middle of each side.

You have to fold the big folds in at each corner (do one at a time) so it looks like a pleat at each corner (like an unsewn seam) (ensuring the spare fabric is smooth) then fix all around the bottom securely & trim any spare fabric.

Does that make any sense?

If you have small children it might be worth buying a curved needle and hand stitching the pretend seam at each corner (so no food gets posted)

i follow until the folding the big folds into pleats bit! As for the curved needle I think i may have to take my chances with posted food!

OK

If you just pulled the faric taut & stapled you would have 2 large triangle wing things

You need to fold them inside so they will be underneath the nice neat sides
