Why does it smell like this? I used -

water
salt
flour
cream of tartar
and a wee splash of paint for colours.

So why does it smell so vile? And what can I do to prevent it next time? Thanks.

Dont know why it smells so bad but this is my tried and tested recipe for playdough and if you want it to actually smell of something then try adding vanilla or mint essence. However this can sometimes confuse the kids into wanting to taste it!

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 cups water
2 tbsp Oil
4 tbsp Cream of Tartar
Food colouring

Cook all ingredients on the hob on a gentle heat and keep stirring until a dough forms.

Stores in an airtight container for about 2 weeks.

That was the exact recipie that I used! I didn't cook it though, I used boiling water and mixed. Texture is fine though. So either its the paint or the not cooking it?

Using some kind of extracts a good idea thanks. 18month old gives it a lick anyway despite it probably tasting vile and smelling rank!

my trusty recipe was given to me by the local surestart play-group

4 cups flour
1 cup salt
2Tbs cooking oil
1 to 1 1/2 cups cold water
food colouring

Mix flour, salt, and oil. Add food colouring to water and gradually add to flour mixture. Knead.

Store in a plastic bag in the fridge.

To be honest, I make a quarter of this mixture most weeks for my dd and it usually lasts about a week. She loves it .

Substitute a couple of tablespoons of the flour for cocoa. It smells gorgeous! Looks like poo mind you.
