Knitting bag - pattern?

I would like to make a birthday present for a knitting friend of mine. I thought of sewing a bag to keep her knitting in. Traditional sort of cloth bag with plastic/wooden handles.

Can anyone give me an idea of suitable dimensions, or even direct me towards a pattern? Is it better to be wide and shallow, or deep?

Thanks in advance!

The one thing I would say is make sure it's long enough for a knitting needle.

Thanks, but I'm a sewer not a knitter. Can you give me an idea of how long needles are?

mine are all about 35 cm. i made my own knitting bag by copying the dimensions of a tote bag, and then outting some elastic in to the side to hold needles in place.

Also, make sure it's a fabric with a close weave so that the needles can't pole through.
