Sewing machine box - should I keep it?

Hi all - I bought a sewing machine a year ago from a local specialist shop. I still have the box it came in but my husband wants to get rid of it.
Do I need to hang onto it considering if anything went wrong with the sewing machine I would take it back to the place where I bought it? Or would it be wiser to keep just in case? TIA

My husband said it shouldn’t be kept in the loft as it’s a fire hazard so it’s been in his shed. I can see that he wants to free up some space.

It’s just whether it would be wise to hang onto it? I was interested in what other sewers had done.

It's not going to self-combust so I'd just stick it in the loft and ignore the fire hazard comment.

You probably don't need the box, but is that really what you are asking? Sometimes the question asks about the box, but it's really about something deeper.
If that's not the case, then I apologise, but so often the smallest questions are really about the biggest issues.

Is it the protective case? If so, then keep it. I keep my machines in their cases when they aren’t in use to minimise dust getting into the mechanisms.

If it is just the cardboard box then no, you don’t need it. If you have any issues with it, proof of purchase should be enough. Sewing machines are generally fairly low maintenance and keep running for decades if well looked after (including regular services - frequency will depend how much use it gets). You are unlikely to have any issues with it. If you do, then just talk to the people you bought it from.

Now - more importantly - any interesting sewing projects you would like to share?

I put boxes in the garage with a date on for the guarantee, then chuck out when it's expired.

The question is only about the box! I tend to hang onto things ‘just in case’ and my husband likes a good clear out. It does have a carry case that I keep it in so it is protected.

Good to know they are fairly low maintenance! I can always take it back to my local shop in case of any issues.

I’m currently making the Samara top by Tilly and the Buttons. I’m enjoying making it but don’t have a huge amount of free time. Saying that I have an extra long weekend and hope to finish it.

I’m a bit like you OP, keeping things just in case. DH likes a good clear out. I’m trying to teach myself to get rid of things and he is becoming more understanding of things I can’t get rid of.

Nobody is going to ask for the original box after a year. I’d chuck it.
Just make sure there are no accessories rattling around inside that you haven’t worked out how to use yet.

I just got a new machine and put the box in the loft, until the warranty runs out. It's also useful if you move house but not essential.

Glad to hear it is about the box! My husband and I have this sissue sometimes, but he's the ones who likes to keep things. We tend to keep boxes until we are sure the thing works, and since you aren't likely to need to post it anywhere, you can get rid of the box. Just don't accidentally chuck the manual with it(I may have done exactly this!).

The case or the box? The case then absolutely hold on to it! My DD bought an excellent old sewing machine and the original case was essential to its value and also makes it easy to transport and keep all the accessories. Or is it the cardboard box that’s branded, then you can fold that flat to store. If it didn’t come with the case and only the box, does it have the styrofoam bits? I’d keep it for sure.

You might need them for services, depending on the machine and who you would use. I've got a massive box on top of my wardrobe as we have no loft and the place I'd want to have it serviced is either a 2.5 hour round trip, twice, if DH can get the time off or mail in.

I think you need to keep any kind of hard carry case that the machine came with, for transport (and if you have time away from sewing it would keep the dust off the machine), but you don’t need to keep the cardboard packaging unless you have plans to resell.

I kept mine when I was still planning to move house, and used them - the machine I had without a box I bought a travel bag for instead.

Now that I don't ever intend to move again, I've got rid of the boxes for the overlocker/embroiderer, and even the travel bag for the machine as it was destroyed in the moves (but better that than the machine being destroyed)
