Tips for knitting intarsia on chunky yarn (Project Hail Mary sweater)?

I haven't knitted in years - switched to crochet and sewing - but I've just bought the pattern for Grace's sweater in Project Hail Mary (Modified version of the Mary Maxim vintage wolf pattern) at the request of DS1.

I've never done intarsia work so I know it's going to be a challenge. Yarn is chunky. Would I be better buying circular needles or regular? Any sanity-saving tips or tutorials welcome!
