Inherited a load of cashmere cardigans that are too big

No idea where to post this! They're lovely round neck cardigans but they're just too big for me - any creative ideas for what I can do with them before I put them on eBay?

Turn the sleeves into wristwarmers?

Felt them and cut up to make into bags or Christmas ornaments?

SweeetFannyAdams · 06/12/2025 23:23

Triple your mince pie intake over Christmas? 🤭🎄

SwallowsandAmazonians · 06/12/2025 23:49

If they are one or two sizes too large can you just take them in? It's very easy even hand sewing. Or take them to a tailor.

SirChenjins · 06/12/2025 23:55

Great ideas, thank you! Increasing my mince pie consumption sounds like an exceptionally good plan 😂

@SwallowsandAmazonians they're a couple of sizes too big - would taking them in be doable? How would I approach that? And how would I seal the seams? I'm ok with a needle and thread, so could manage something that wasn't too complicated.

Do you really need a cardigan to have a precise fit? Just wear a big one. Who cares?

Iwantacampervan · 07/12/2025 08:44

You could send them to my friend's husband to wash - he's managed to shrink at least one of her cashmere jumpers!

Lol! I've done the same to one of mine in the past - I could have cried.

Could you sew them permanently together and add bigger, decorative buttons so you’ve got an over-sized jumper? Slouchy jumpers look so much better than slouchy cardigans.

Or sew the front together (as if buttoned) but with the buttonholes behind and cut the buttons off. You’d have a ‘double seam’ running down the front which you could then copy down the back by taking a tuck, making it smaller overall. Or make a deliberate tuck down the back, sewing down both ‘sides’ of the tuck and making a feature but leave the front as opening buttons.

Or sell them all and buy one or two new ones that do fit.

honeylulu · 07/12/2025 09:32

Just keep them to wear around the house in the winter. I've got a couple of oversized ones that make me look a bit scruffy so wouldn't wear them out but lovely and warm to wear at home where no one sees.

SirChenjins · 07/12/2025 09:45

@IsThisTheWaytoSlamMyPillow good ideas there, thanks. And yes, I may end up selling them to buy a new one - but they have sentimental value as I have inherited them, so I'd prefer to do something with them if possible.

@honeylulu I would like to wear them outside if possible, I have a lot of jumpers and cardigans to wear indoors, they're my wfh wardrobe.

Tailor them, don’t cut them up.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 07/12/2025 10:17

Have a look at YouTube, insta, Facebook, Pinterest etc. Jumpers mods have been really popular for ages and some of them are really interesting. Take your time, enjoy the process of making them into things you will want to keep

SirChenjins · 07/12/2025 10:23

Oh good idea, never thought of looking at YouTube etc - no idea why not Confused

(let us know if you do put them on eBay or Vinted though - I'm always in the market for a nice "preloved" cashmere cardigan)

SirChenjins · 07/12/2025 18:14

Thanks for that link @olderbutwiser, and I will do 😊
