You need a "helping hands" a soldering iron, solder and a soldering iron stand which should come with a little sponge thing to rest the tip on and maybe a heat mat. There is a good set on b and q but mumsnet won't let me post links

This is a better soldering kit

UK Soldering Iron Kit Stand Solder Desolder Pump Sucker. And b and q do cheaper helping hands too.

Hang on. Will attempt the link again

I work in the Rail Industry, invest in some PPE, glasses and gloves, solder can flick and you don't want it in her eye.
Also think about ventilation, we used fume extractors, she doesn't need to be breathing the fumes in.
YouTube videos in "tinning" would be a good start

This is all so helpful
Thank you!

any practise build kit recommendations?

the hobbycraft links… im keen to buy as get 30% off everything there (friend works there). Would it do the job as a starter for ten?

You can get all sorts of little kits to help you learn soldering and basic electronics - some of them are even Christmas themed...

Solder contains something called flux which can spatter - wear an apron and cover your surfaces. There are some great Youtube videos showing you how to do the basics. Very fine detailed hand-soldering is a dying skill - if she shows an aptitude for it she could earn very good money!

In all honesty - the Hobbycraft soldering iron looks doesn't look great, but a better one (I swear by Weller) will cost 5 times the price so it might be best to buy the cheaper one and then upgrade later.

If it’s silver jewellery she would like to solder then check out cooksonsgold or similar. It’s Black Friday this week so they will have deals on.

You are all wonderful

thank you
