I want a basic dress pattern suitable for multiple fabrics, sleeveless to wear with a T-shirt

Like a pinafore type dress, knee length or longer, really plain so I can add a belt or dress it up or down etc. I can sew but I’m not hugely talented. I can’t do random strange things which might make the dress look a bit better if you have an eye for Vogue covers, I’m happier with the slightly easier, plainer version.

This is a mythical dress and will be suitable for work, lounging around, weddings, nights out, holidays and gardening.

Ideally I will have ten versions of this dress in my wardrobe 😁.

Bonus points for sleeves that I can add to some versions, but it must be suitable to make a sleeveless version too.

Basically, I want the dress version of a pair of jeans.

I forgot to add - I’ve seen a few patterns online, but can anyone recommend any of them? Are there any universally beloved patterns, or pattern companies? Who or what is heads above the competition?

Oh I want this too! Sounds wonderful and I hope it exists.

More of a fit and flare shape, optional sleeves I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think?

That’s very nice. I love the collar/neckline situation. Not what I’m after at all, but I’ve saved it as a possible buy.

I like that very much!

I’m guessing it would be easy to make it slightly longer?

A little more left field perhaps, but how about the Grainline Farrow dress? It has interesting design lines (but nothing too wacky), is easy to sew and comes with optional sleeves.

I’ve made a few - ranging from casual to smart depending on the fabric used.

I’m not a fan of the wonky hemline in that one. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Yes, it should be fairly simple to make it longer. The seam down the front is tempted me to make one with buttons too.

This is nice too

Could maybe find this one in person and try it on?

Have a look at the Tammy Handmade Margo Pinafore

Pinafore dresses don't tend to have sleeves but if you are wanting multi-option straightforward dress patterns look at Tilly and the Buttons e.g. Nell and Lyra

I think I made some dresses from this one
