For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

I’ve never sewn any of their patterns - what doesn’t work for you? I am tall and pear shaped but most of my height is in my legs.

PickAChew · 04/02/2026 19:53

All the proportions are wrong - I'm a fairly short, apple with low slung boobs and skinny limbs. I know a few pears who like her patterns. I need to move all the curves, grade and add belly room, even for a simple top, slim down sleeves and shorten the armscye... Too much like work 😂

twobluechickens · 04/02/2026 22:45

That does sound like a lot of faff! I managed to get a couple of Burda blazer PDFs in the sale ($6.29 each or something!) so am going to try a mishmash of those first.

Jins · 05/02/2026 11:39

I’ve got a couple of ITS patterns but I’m not confident they’ll work for me. Perhaps that should be my next challenge.

I’m really proud of the way my cubic bag has gone together and I’ve been unusually neat. So inevitably I can’t get the zipper slider to work on the continuous zipper. I’ve just ordered some more sliders in case they are the problem but I doubt it. It’s always a tricky task but I’ve just wasted an hour on it. Might have to scrap this bag as there’s no recovery possible at this late stage in construction.

kittykarate · 05/02/2026 12:37

Minerva has an end of line clearance on some patterns (40% off). A bit of all the brands really, quite a few costume/cosplay ones. Didn't buy anything in the end.

OnlyTheBravest · 05/02/2026 23:43

I snapped up the car coat from Assembly line in the Minerva sale. I have had my eye on it for a while. I am heading to the Stitch festival this month, so will be on the look our for fabric for a toile and the main make. I do not want anything too heavy. Maybe a medium gaberdine twill type material either in a funky pattern, olive green or sandy beige colour.

No idea when I will start it because I have a ton of projects I want to have a crack at. I think I have enough pattern and fabrics for the next 3 years.

😝

the zip pull is a real pain . I only managed it as my DH helped - one to juggle about with lining up the zip pull , as the other holding the zip ends firmly . Still took a fair bit of faffing - I decided I would only put one on , but once the first one was on , the second was easy

Jins · 06/02/2026 09:10

I’ve got a zipper jig which does help getting the two sections in place and the slider moves freely but doesn’t zip up. Absolute nightmare this time. Will give it one more try with the new pullers and then cut my losses and finish it without a working zip. It’ll work as a storage tray in my sewing room if nothing else

Hiddendoor · 06/02/2026 13:16

Can anyone suggest where I could get some good quality, not too heavy, plain jersey material from? Online please.

Not heavy ponte or sweatshirt, more the stuff shop bought t shirts are made from.

Looking for jewel colour plains - fuscia, purples, teal, petrol, royal blue, maybe yellow, maybe white...

I have looked at 1st for Fabric, Sew Me Sunshine, Sew Much Moor, Grid Fabrics but not found anything i love.

Not keen on Knighton (got some sweatshirt Fabric that bobbled horrendously) and have been disappointed by Rainbow Fabrics jersey (love a lot of their patterned cottons though).

I am thinking about summer but can only find wintry stuff really!

Thank you!

PickAChew · 06/02/2026 13:24

Jelly fabrics are good, @Hiddendoor -their organic jersey is a little lighter and stretchier than their non-organic.

Ooh, not heard of them. Will look, thank you!

Hiddendoor · 06/02/2026 15:02

Jelly fabrics had exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

Jins · 06/02/2026 16:20

Well. New zip sliders arrived and went on first time. Will progress tomorrow

OperationalSupport · 06/02/2026 22:04

@Hiddendoor Dalston Mill usually have a decent range of plain jerseys.

MO0N · 07/02/2026 00:30

I forgot to post a pic of my mystery box. I couldnt be happier😄.
Lots of pink and some of it is pretty wild. A few I wouldn't have chosen but I feel very motivated to come up with suitable garments, no matter how funky😄
I've made a start and am making a lounge-wear all in one thing out of the striped, wooly, knitted fabric.

Having trouble uploading pics but the cubic bag is done. Still not perfect but a huge improvement on the last one

Frumpyunicorn · 08/02/2026 08:41

Pound fabrics do plain jersey cotton and also a lovely plain jersey bamboo

Castlerigg · 08/02/2026 08:50

Looks like a good selection @MO0N, I like the look of the white leafy one third down. I haven’t started anything with my bundle yet.

I do really need to use up some stash. I’m tempted to dig in and find the oldest piece of fabric in there, and make something with it. It would mean dragging everything out, it’s all in tubs stacked up in a Tetris style formation. Probably no bad thing to get it out and see what’s there, but I do need to build myself up to it.

Thank you and yes I am also particularly keen on the white leafy one 😁
I hope you can find the fortitude to tackle your stash 😁

I’ve taken on my biggest alteration challenge to date. Years ago my mum gave DH my uncle’s dinner suit. It’s beautiful 1950s, gorgeous fabric, beautifully made etc. DH doesn’t go to many events that need black tie but he went to a burns night and discovered that in the 10 years since he wore the suit he’d grown and the trousers were not going to fit.

As he’s unlikely to need it for another 10 years he’s going to try to buy suitable matching trousers at the time but in the meantime I’ve decided to see what I can do. There’s loads of fabric in the back seam so I’ve opened it up and tacked a new seam as close to the edge of the fabric as I dare but I’m going to have to put a triangular gusset at the back.

Trip to Abakhan today came up with a perfect colour match but sadly it was in ponte. Woolf and wool blends were way out in colour. I’ve bought it anyway as the colour and weight is right and will give it a go.

Trouble is that I need a very small amount of fabric, could have asked them to cut me 50cm but bought the lot. 3m of great quality ponte added to the groaning stash.

Castlerigg · 13/02/2026 18:51

I did some sewing! I returned to the baker boy hat that I started in January. I got the crown outer and lining assembled no problem, but getting the peak into the band was a mission. Sewing opposite curves together + making sure that I was stitching the correct edge to the band + making sure that the centre back seams would end up on the inside when I’d finished = completely melted brain.

My eye sight is definitely not what it once was, and my thread was an excellent colour match for the very thick pure wool outer fabric. That made unpicking tricky. However, I got it done, and I think it’ll be presentable.

I’ll tackle the next stage tomorrow, when it’s daylight!

Brefugee · 13/02/2026 19:49

can't wait to see it!d
i made a cover for my overlocker - which is slightly too big but not a problem - out of some of the fabric (patterned bit, plain bit for the sides and curtain lining for the lining) from a set of (dinosaur) curtains i got for a fiver at a boot sale.

I love it

twobluechickens · 13/02/2026 20:20

I’ve offered to replace the zip on a friend’s bag. Thought it would be easy, just take out the topstitching and insert a new zip. But no, it looks like I might need to take the whole thing apart! That said, there’s a decent seam allowance rather than it having been graded after sewing but I am a bit concerned about taking it apart 😬

Frumpyunicorn · 13/02/2026 21:22

Looking forward to seeing the hat @Castlerigg

I have finished the Clementine pinafore by Sew Over It. I am pretty pleased with it, it's my first try of Princess seams. I have a few jersey tops to toile in some cheap jersey then I want to do the Winslow culottes and Cleo blouse.
