For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

thats a good idea @Castlerigg. I think I’ll see if I can pick some up for a test

Hiddendoor · 25/01/2026 17:16

hello!
Just jumping back in with some sewing (finally). Having made Christmas presents (handbag, two ties, cushion cover and a pencil case) I've decided it is time to use up some of the fabric I bought over the Christmas break.

I have a thin purple sweatshirt material from Sew Me Sunshine that I had thought about making a plain sweater with. But I have quite a few jumpers and sweaters so have decided to make an Atelier Jupe Zoey with it. With longer sleeves though.

Fingers crossed it will work out!

Has anyone made a jacket/blazer? I’ve seen a few patterns but nothing that really grabs me. Am looking for something a bit vintage (not 80s!).

Have you seen anything ready to wear that inspires you? It might help us to give you some pointers.

twobluechickens · 29/01/2026 21:28

Good idea! I love this Walker Slater one.

oh shame, i made a fair few in the 80s and 90s.

The most successful (no digital photos, alas) were short, round necked "Chanel" styled ones. I made a few in very rough coarse silk (looked like sacking but was beautifully soft and sort of shiny)

Ooh, nice. I haven't seen anything with the curved front (though I swear burda might have) but I've seen a few with that nipped in look and a bit of a peplum.

This has the neckline you like and the asymmetry but is more of a relaxed fit.

Lekala does a dupe! (though with those instructions I would regard it as one to aim for)

just back to report that i bought and used a 1/4" sewing foot and it's fantastic. Also tried using the open foot to sew along a line and that was also fantastic.

Am really dim for not having done either of those things before now!

I saw this one but for some reason I didn’t clock that it had a jacket version, only the coat! Doh. The Lekala one seems to use the same pictures as some dodgy Chinese site so I’m a bit wary, although maybe it’s worth a punt for £3.99.

twobluechickens · 31/01/2026 18:08

Thanks, by the way!

EricTheHalfASleeve · 02/02/2026 18:22

What stitch would you suggest to mend a coverstitch hem that's partly unravelled? It's a shop bought swim rash vest where the hem has unravelled a few inches. I have a sewing machine and an overlocker. Bit worried that a stretch stitch may result in my machine eating the thin fabric so thinking a wide zigzag?

PickAChew · 02/02/2026 19:49

Do you have a triple step zigzag, @EricTheHalfASleeve - you often see that one on bras and swimwear and it stays nice and flat with minimal tunnelling.

EricTheHalfASleeve · 02/02/2026 20:02

Thank you, I will check my machine book - should do it's a modern machine. What needle would you use for swimwear? Ballpoint?

PickAChew · 02/02/2026 21:18

Definitely some sort of ballpoint/jersey needle. Or even stretch if your machine is a bit contrary.

Jins · 03/02/2026 06:51

I tend to use a jersey needle for swimwear.

I succumbed to a second Knighton box at the weekend. There was a code…., Most of my stash is boxed up ready to move and I’m hoping for some shorter lengths to make some T shirts.

While stash packing I found some pieces of waterproof canvas which I’d been given and decided to make another cubic bag. I’m moving slowly this time in the hope that I end up with a tidier finish. I’m pleased with the handle so far and have used my heat weld tape for the first time. I’m planning on getting the lining done today, I’ve got a few options but haven’t decided which one to use yet.

Rosenspants · 03/02/2026 08:50

Hello….not a huge amount of sewing since I made all those tissue holders as gifts in December. However….with a January birthday I decided that I am ready to learn to use an overlocker…having started sewing totally from scratch just a couple of years ago. And just asked my nearest and dearest to contribute to the cost as a birthday gift. After researching I bought the Janome MyLock 454 D model and have bought the TATB online course on how to thread and use it. I still feel very much the beginner but am quite excited!

twobluechickens · 03/02/2026 10:03

Congratulations @Rosenspants ! I wouldn’t be without mine. I was a bit nervous at first but just decided to go for it and now I use it for all sorts. I do need to replace the blade but have been putting it off because they’re £££.

Jins · 03/02/2026 10:45

Enjoy @Rosenspants. I love my overlocker.

Second mystery box just arrived. I think the picker has been peeping at my wardrobe 😀

Brefugee · 03/02/2026 12:58

will be interested to hear what you think of the course @Rosenspants
I have been thinking about trying it, just so i get more use out of my Overlocker than just seam finishes and rolled hems.

(how often do you need to replace the blade? i suppose you know when it needs doing?)

PickAChew · 03/02/2026 14:23

My overlocker'blades needs changing @Brefugee -it's chewing stuff up. The screw on the lower one is stuck fast, though.

This just landed in my inbox and I thought of you, @twobluechickens https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/shimla-jacket-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/

Brefugee · 03/02/2026 15:54

i don't use mine that much, but i've had it a couple of years so i do have half an eye on how sharp the blade is.
I'm not going to think about it until i need to

twobluechickens · 03/02/2026 19:12

Ooh thank you @PickAChew , that’s lovely!

It's very classy, isn't it? I'd be tempted if the ITS block wasn't so utterly wrong for me.
