Knitting question; will the lumpiness block out of cotton yarn?

I've never tried using cotton yarn before; every time I've left the work overnight its left a ridge where the needle has stretched the stitches a bit. It's looking very 'handknitted' which wasn't the look I was going for. Is there a way round this? Will it block out and look respectable, or am I going to end up with the rustic look whatever I do now? I now realise that a really busy pattern would ahve disguised the unforgiving yarn - but it's in stocking stitch.
