Pattern for a beanie hat

6 replies

I thought it would be easy to find a free pattern for a basic beanie knit in DK on straight needles for an adult. Everything I am finding is either knit in the round or Arran / Worsted weight.

Can any one help me with number of cast on stitches for 22" head and how to decrease so it's a snug fit rather than long / floppy / slouch?

It is to match a snood that I have been given which is knitted in moss stich with 4ply doubled up, I've got the wool and needles.
Thanks 🤞

Have you checked on ravelry, as I can't believe they don't have one there. You can find a pattern for anything knitted or crocheted there.

@Twosticksandstring thank you for this

@redfishcat yep I looked on ravelry

I think I had tied myself up in knots looking for a flat knit, moss stitch, DK beanie and not knowing how to adapt a pattern

Hi, I was also looking for a straight needle pattern recently. I eventually found this one and made Version One (I made a pom pom instead of the flower).

Hat pattern

Most modern hat patterns are in the round so you might need to look at more retro patterns for flat/seamed hats.

You could try using a pattern designed for in the round but knit it flat if you have a bit of knitting experience. You'll need to scrutinise the crown decreases though as you probably don't want to be decreasing on the wrong side row.

Yes it is the crown decrease that I couldn't work out.
